You don't like the idea of providing a safe place for your dog while you are & are not home?

Honestly that just doesn't make sense-when crate training is done properly the dog LOVES their crate. The dog will spend time in there even when you are home because it becomes a safe haven for them.

Provided your dog is not just a puppy then you should be OK with working a normal work day before coming home to let the dog out. But if your dog has not been house trained yet then you need to make arrangements for your dog to be walked/let out during the day.

I'm linking you to my favorite crate training site below. Read it, use it, love it, live it. Your dog will thank you for it!

A puppy cannot hold it for this long - its like asking a baby not to pee all day - it isn't going to happen.

Crating is the best way to potty train - the other alternative is locking in a small bathroom and wait to potty train until the dog can hold it all day (when they are year older or more). You will have a LOT of messes to clean up because during this time you will be teaching the dog its okay to pee in the house.

You either need to NOT get a puppy or you need to hire someone to come home during the day and let the dog out.

Here is some info on puppies and crate training.

That happened to me when I first got my pup. I did crate him, but I paid a neighbor to walk him twice a day to give him time to stretch and exercise. A full day is much too long to expect a pup not to relieve itself crate or not. The crate was to protect him from getting into something that could hurt him. After a while, I gated my kitchen to give him more space. He has now graduated to the run of the house.

Hire a dog walker / pet sitter/ etc. to let her out and play with her. And once she is 3 months old u can take her to doggie day care. You can lock her in a room now instead of crate training (don't leave her to the whole house) but make sure you dog proof it - mine chewed up my coach purse (sad). Good luck.

wow, the crating and pet walkers during the day is also good, but be aware terriers are high energy and poodles well an idle poodle will get into mischief

My dogs stay in their crates when my husband and I are at work - I have a pet sitter come in mid-day to walk them and play.

Get a cat. Part-time dog ownership is not fair to the dog.
