Planning a little getaway, just me, for some rest and "me" time. Planning to drive into the Smoky Mtn. region. I'd like to do some light hiking, cycling. sightseeing. I'm somewhat familiar with the region, but I've never driven this great a distance alone, or never taken a vacation by myself. Any words of advice to stay safe during my travels?

I travel alone and witth my 2 year old quite often. Always make sure your car is in good working order before you leave. You never know what crazies will pull over to help you out (and murder you) on the side of the raod. Travel popular hwys or interstates at all times if possible. Back roads can be dangerous and no cell phone signal. When you stop to get gas, stop at a large station. And when you are hiking(which I love to do as well, I grew up in Tenn.) make sure you let someone at your hotel and a familay member know that you are going and about where you are going so that way if something does happen they will know to contact help when you don't return. Have a great time. You should be okay. Just always be aware of your surroundings and stay safe. I wish I could get away from these kids and do something like that!!!Agh!!!

A little caution goes a long way. Little things like not displaying money or a wallet full of credit cards. Make sure your car and spare are in good shape, and ideally have a roadside assistance plan like AAA so you aren't at the mercy of strangers. Keep your cell charged and with you at all times. Call someone at home each day to check in and let them know your general plans/location. Stay on marked trails when hiking and schedule your day so that you are off the trails well before dark. Carry pepper spray where it can be easy accessed. When you hike, don't carry food with you. This time of year bears are gorging for the winter and if they get a whiff of your granola bars...otherwise, they don't really care about people. If you are staying at motel, as for a room whose door is within eyesight of the lobby if possible. Anyone looking for trouble would be more likely to hang out on the backside, out of plain view.

Well, I don't know how readily I would drive into the woods alone. Just make sure you have an emergency kit in your car, water and blankets. You never know. Always take a cell phone and some snacks. Just keep everything packed away in case you need it. You should be absolutely fine, but don't leave the hiking paths and trails. Have a great trip.

Let someone know where you are at all times. Friends, Hotel Front Desk Clerk.
If something where to happen the biggest problem searchers have is when the person left and where they were last seen.
Other wise just enjoy yourself.

If you can afford it I would suggest a GPS phone, pepper spray (a gun if you are comfortable with that), maps and keep in touch with people you know. Inform them of when and where you are going. Tell them you will call them back at a certain time and make sure you do.
