I worked in social services for a considerable period of time. I generally give them the information to the local "drop-in" shelter office - where they can access the various services available to the working poor/homeless.
The professional pan-handlers get ticked off and say rude things. The really needy are usually grateful and appreciative. It's then that I'll offer some spare change - or not.

There's a Polish woman selling the Big Issue right outside my house and I pass her probably 4-6 times a day. I'm a student and can't really afford to be giving money out but I say hello or good morning every time I see her. I just think it's polite.

I give them money. I watched a programme once on TV about the homeless and it really struck a chord. Can you imagine never having anything to call your own? Not having a home to go to at the end of the day. It must be terrible :(

"You see the road you leave behind you
Is another road you're gonna have to come back down
It's just the way this big old world turns 'round
You'll find somehow somewhere someplace sometime
You gotta go back down the road you leave behind."- David Lee Murphy "The Road You Leave Behind"
Everytime I see a homeless person I think of that song. So I usually give some spare change. I also think, what if this is God testing me to see if Im trying to do good.

I dont give money to the homeless person directly as yo do not know if they are a drug addict or an alcoholic and will use the money on drink and drugs. Instead I donate to a homeless charity where the money will be used directly on homeless causes

Depends on the situation. A beggar in Vegas may just be feeding a habit like gambling or alcohol. A beggar at a rest stop may be genuinely hungry and needy. You just have to follow your heart. Jesus teaches us to help these people regardless of what their circumstances are.....I offer them money or food when I can.

Ignore them. But I remember giving some of them some changes, may be a couple of times.

There is a difference in homeless who i would give some $$ too..and bums who are just too dang lazy to work, and expect people to just hand them $$--who i do NOT give money too.
Just be careful who you do and do not give $$ to. I dont feel sorry for lazy, drunks or addicts who just want money to blow on beer (which has happened to me, gave the guy money he hsaid heneeded oil his car was broke down...went in the store and bought BEER!) Pathetic
