When I was young, my best friend's father was a deacon and he always answered all my questions and knew where to refer me. I couldn't get past the first Chapter 'cause I didn't like or understand the word "begat". Heehee! Now, as an adult, my husband can find any answer or scripture in the Bible that I ask him about in no time. I prefer the Amplified Bible now because it's written in my language. And, believe it or not, there have been times when I had worries that I would just pray for divine knowledge and open up the Book and there was the answer I needed at the time. So, I have to say that God has always been there too!

Our first pastor was a tremendous help to us the first year we were saved. Every Sunday evening before church, he spent an hour with us reading the scriptures and answering our questions. He started in Genesis. He also recommended the commentaries of J.Vernon McGee because they are easy to understand and trust worthy for teaching basic doctrine. I still advise new Christians to try J. Vernon McGee. Eventually, all Christians come out of the "child" stage and begin to lean only on the Holy Spirit to discern the Word (or at least they should). Paul fussed at some for having to be milk fed instead of growing in the Lord and I'm afraid we have a lot of those. But, for the ones who really hunger for God's Word, and desire to know God in a deeper way.........they seek Him in the scriptures for themselves and it is the Holy Spirit that opens up the meaning. It's a beautiful thing.

I have started to read the Bible after i met and talked for a good while with Evangelic and Mormon missionaries but at the end chose to became a member of Seventh Day Adventists. They all influenced in my understanding of the Bible but I really think that anyone can read the Bible and come to the same understanding because there is the Spirit of Truth to guide us but unfortunately only if we let Him.

Reading a Buddhist lama, he explained many things I had completely misperceived and even totally missed out. Then some shows on TV gave me different perspectives to reflect upon. Fortunately I'm a critical reader so I don't take things at face value and that helped me a lot when reading the Bible and the Kuran.

Ja, let me ask you something? When you ask in english do you do it on the spanish version of YA or not? I never know if I should answer you in english or spanish... It is because english is not my native language and it´s a little difficult for me to do it this way.
Well, to your question:
The most helpful tool for me was not my own criteria but the scientifical tools that I had the fortune to learn in some courses of Sacred Scritpture. My teachers have MD on it received from the most prestigious institutes in Europe and involves so many disciplines that there are few possibilities to be not objetive when you study it.

Me! I decided to sit down one day and read the bible as I would any book, not reading into what I had been taught. I was shocked! It is one of the most pornographic, violent works of literature I have ever read. I am grateful to have learned this from it. This set me on a course to following the advice of Jesus to seek, not blindly follow blind leaders.
The most influential being(s) in my life was, is and will always be the Divine Mother/Father and the son. He/She, they, lead me away from false teachings and profits.
