Well, 40 is pretty big...another decade, another milestone. You could make her breakfast in bed or cook dinner for her, but if you do, don't forget to clean up the mess immediately after. Clear the table, load the dishwasher, etc. You could also make her some homemade coupons redeemable whenever she sees fit for backrubs, foot messages, hugs, do the dishes, etc., be creative. A homemade card is also great with a letter or poem if you do poetry letting her know how lucky you are to have her for a mother. Whatever your natural talents are, zone in on them. If you play the guitar then write her a song or play her a song, if you draw then draw her something special even if you can't afford to frame it. And lastly, don't forget to bake her a cake complete it with frosting and candles if you can...she'll be wowed and surprised. Good luck!

collect old photos of you and her and of other family members and put it in a album and write her a thank you letter and insert it into the album so she will always have it. or get one of those picture frames that can hold 10 or so pics and put together a collage....

do a service. trust me, your time and thoughtfulness will mean more than any gift. wash and detail her car. clean the house. make a nice dinner. anything that makes her life easier or nicer will make her day. my dad turned 79 this year. i made him dinner and brought it over to him. he said it was better than any gift he could have gotten.
