I've heard that way.
I have also heard you are supposed to excuse yourself and go to the restroom to get rid of it. Then return to the table.
I guess it more or less depends on the situation and type of dinner, casual, informal, semi-formal, formal or white tie. Also on the seating arrangements whether or not you can get up and transgress to the powder room without causing too much disruption at the tables.

Your mom is absolutely right. The more fuss you make about it, the more noticeable it becomes.
The idea is to get it out of your mouth and onto your side plate without any fuss at all and then immediately continue your meal or chatting.

I was taught to do the same. I can't honestly think of any other way to discard something that can't be swallowed. What did others tell you to do?

Listen to mom...she won't steer you wrong. Even your bare hand is better than swallowing or spitting.
If you are choking, trust me, nobody wants you to choke. So, if you are choking and you must spit it out our fish it out...go ahead.
When you are choking, everyone understands.
