Don't you jsut find it strange that atheists would bother to look at something they despise? I find it very odd because they are just wasting their lives on something they don't believe in. Correct me if I'm wrong

And, no, i don't have a level in Astrophysics, yet then, it is not rocket technology. basic good judgment dictates that a million=a million and nil=0. we don't stay in a universe the place 0=a million. subsequently, i will look on the Bible and notice that for the duration of a single paragraph a thought is placed forward that contradicts a thought in yet another paragraph. you do no longer choose skills to coach good judgment considering the fact this is a few thing we learn at an extremely early age. yet, in basic terms for exciting, shall we take this better. tutor that Jesus existed. i'm somewhat specific that Jesus probable did exist, yet are you able to tutor it. there is evidently the caveat which you won't have the capacity to apply books except you're keen to concede that The Lord of The rings proves that Bilbo Baggins existed.

Atheists don't despise the bible. It's just a book. What they despise are the huge numbers of people that blindly believe every word it says with absolutely no rational basis for doing so.

I suppose your question reflects Christian thinking, though. You're told not to believe in something therefore you want to stay as far away from that thing as possible, without researching it or finding out anything about it at all. How very logical.

Well, you are.
The first guys to read the Bible from a scientific point of view were the French atheists.
Why ?
Well, I am not really sure, but it is my understanding that they did it to find where they could attack it.
I have seen that comunists read the Bible, but, of course, from an entirely different perspective. The idea is to ridicule it. Sometimes they read a fragment in public just for people realize the absurdity, according to the way they present it. ( they don't use it to preach, as you understand ).
They still make it mandatory in certain cases in order to know how to criticize it and attack believers.
Did I answer your question ?
To mr morden:
It is my personal experience that atheists despise the Bible in general. Just look at most of the answers here.
If that means being narrow minded, I agree

Just because they dont believe in the Bible doesnt mean they despise it. Studying what others believe is one way people can learn to accept or understand what others believe in. Its too bad more Christians dont read about other religions - maybe the world would be a better place.

Where did you get the idea that atheists despise the bible? Not believing in something is not the same as despising it. Reading a book that has had a major roll in shaping the society we live in, regardless of whether I'm a Christian or an atheist, is just part of a well rounded education. To view it otherwise would be pretty closed minded.

You would think that religious belief - any religious belief - would be regarded as a mere curio or irrelevancy by a true atheist and altogether fail to excite their interest. However,in practical terms the atheist is not so much a mere nonbeliever as a person who exhibits a morbid and compelling fascination with the religious beliefs of others, apparently for the negative-logic purpose of discrediting such beliefs. The motive is evidently petty malice and nothing more; one can perceive that simply by observation of the sneering and insulting tone they customarily employ. However they serve no purpose to the the Christian and are best quietly ignored, particularly insofar as much of their behavior is intrinsically attention-seeking.

I think it's wonderful!! Most of the atheists I know are very analytical. That's how God designed them. Yet, could it be that something unexplainable is pulling them? It's not easy at first accepting God. Remember, it's God's will that we ALL be reconciled to Him. It's up to us(all people) to accept that. Servants of Christ are not here to protect God, but to tell the Good News of the gospel and show God's free gift of salvation. One day every knee will bow before the Lord. We can't explain all the things of the Lord, no one can, He is too great. But He will be our teacher at a pace that we can understand.... If we let Him.

You are wrong, here is why. I do not hate the Bible. I greatly dislike the Organizations that use the Bible to control Minds and hurt People. I first studied the Bible when i was a Christian. I wanted to know more about my Faith. Reading the Bible and having an affinity for History ruined my Faith. I study all sorts of Religious Books not just the Bible. I am a big fan of Mythology as well as History.

You're wrong.

We know the Bible because most of us were once believers. It was reading the Bible that drove many of us away from your religion.

Yes, Ray, it's true. I was raised as a Christian, and there was a lot in the Bible that I constantly questioned, but I was always told not to. One day, I decided that I'd start reading it from cover to cover. And I was amazed by all of the scientific impossibilities, contradictions, and outright atrocities. Eventually, I just had to walk away. Reading the Bible wasn't the only thing that did it, but it was certainly ONE of them.

I don't despise the Bible. It's just a book. I simply find most of it ridiculous, and some of it offensive.

In fact, I find in this forum that I know the Bible better than a lot of believers do. Just this morning, I had to correct a Christian who claimed the Golden Rule wasn't a Bible verse.

Most people, regardless of their religion, probably know the Bible, actually. It's a major part of Western literary history.

Sallyjane, what position? What in the world are you talking about?
