1. I have learned more than I expected about breeding: the good and the bad.

2. I learned that although I was under the impression that most dog owners were a calm, loving group, it's like anything else. We are prone to have very strong feelings about subjects that are important to us.

3. I have learned that I'm a really laid back guy, but I am not always patient when it comes to what I feel is appropriate/inappropriate dog ownership.

ETA: I just learned (not on Y!A) but someone might benefit...that Bach's Rescue Remedy is high in alcohol.

My friend was using it on her dog and raved about how it worked. It turned out the poor thing was just pissy drunk ROFL!!

Come on folks! No thumbs down!!!
We don't have to agree, but be respectful.

ETA: I have learned NOT to take other's feelings personally and when I take a moment to ponder why they responded the way they did...believe it or not, I can actually see their perspective.

Please...just share your experiences WITHOUT giving a thumbs down.

1. The lack of knowledge of the average pet owner is very scary....
2. It's even scarier that they know jack about breeding dogs properly and want to do it anyway..
3. We (the ones that want to help), have a LONG way to go in educating about what a puppymill & backyard breeder are and why it's important to buy only from a ethical, responsible purebred breeder.
4. I belong to many forums, but this one takes the cake when it comes to censorship of both questions and answers...( I hate censorship...)

I have learned

1: I'm not the only one who would give my life for my animals.

2: There are some people who will do anything and everything to help you when you have a genunie question.

3: Some people ask questions, but only want you to validate what they have to say not answer their question.

4: Some people will happily breed any dog just because it's cute.

5: There are some excellent breeders who will happily share their knowledge with anyone who wants to breed the right way.

6: Many of the people who breed are totally clueless as to what they are doing. They think you put Inky and Binky together and that's the end of it.

7: Too many people take on animals they can;t afford.

8: Some people think they are right, always right. Most often they are the ones who are always wrong.

9: I have learned some questions are best ignored because no matter how much you beg and plead some people just won;t take their dog to a vet even if it's obviously very sick and you ahve done all you can to give advice where to find financial assistance if this is the reason.

10: I have met some really great people on YA and have learned a lot from them. I know I don;t know everything and I'm always going to be looking to learn more.

Raising dogs is just that devisive of an issue. There are so many different opinions out there about what is appropriate and what isn't. My dog eats almost anything I eat--some people have a real problem with that, but as long as she stays a healthy weight (like she has for the past five years) I'm not changing it. A lot of the thumbs about training may also come from dog owners who have never had a really headstrong dog. I haven't had one myself, and it made me wonder what kind of a person needs a professional trainer to get a dog to behave. Then I met a difficult dog and could understand how the owner had so much trouble with her, and that someone less dog-savvy than him would want professional help. And the 'dog psycology' folks will never agree with the 'respect, reward, and punishment' crowd. No one teaches paper training anymore--it's all about crates nowadays--and I've used paper training and never a crate for every pup I've had. I guess all I'm saying is that there is more than one way to do it right, and people get really opinionated that their way is the best way.

I have learned there are many good people willing to help all they can and don't assume that you're stupid for asking. I've also so learned there are a few who judge you without knowing all the details. I've only been on Y!A a very short time but have learned more than I previously knew. I knew there were people who loved their dogs as much as I do and consider their pets as family too. I also assumed dog owners were the calm type; found out not quite so. Dogs are great for the soul, nerves, humor and unconditional love, truly your BEST FRIEND!!! I learned others are outraged at the poor treatment of pets and don't deserve them. I also found out (experienced) recently, not all vets really give a ____ about your pet, it's all money for them. I switched vets this week after my loss of Lucy(chi) because of a bad vet.

Nice question--
I have learned a lot about people here.

1. Breeders are usually more knowledgeable about dogs than vets or cvts I knew they were more knowledgeable than any cvt, but the vet part surprised me. I didn't realize how so many vets ran in circles trying to diagnose or offering useless surgeries until I heard the stories here. Some of the breeders here are brilliant.

2. People are simply overly consumed with dog's eating habits. Not everything a dog swallows will kill him. But to hear it here, they would all be dead in a week. They simply don't die that easy.

3. People are overly convinced that everything is caused by food allergies.

4. Every human thinks they are the best dog owner in the world.

5. Greekman taught me about the "drive principle" in a dog's instinctual behavior. Very enlightening. I will never look at a dog's behavior the same way.

6. Americans are consumed with the notion of "saving" every dog. For some reason they can't see that some shouldn't be saved. Certain dogs with certain temperaments should be immediately euthanized without guilt. But most Americans are so consumed with the idea that dogs are emotional creatures with a conscience they just can't see that. They don't understand instinct. Go back to number 5.

7. Americans are overly consumed with the health of the grass rather than the health of the dog. They are also too worried about their carpet and concrete. The dog/owner relationship is worth more than the grass, carpet or concrete. There is more inherent value in the dog than in those things.

8. Too many people are too cheap to pay a lousy five dollars for a parvo vaccine. They pay several hundred for a dog, but then get cheap. And then whine when the dog gets parvo.

9. I have learned that we all have too much free time on our hands to answer questions.

10. I have learned that we are all self-centered in our own way because we get too bossy about pets that another person owns.

11. I have learned about the huge amount of overvaccinating going on in this nation. When I read some unsuspecting owner saying, I just took my puppy in for the fourth round of shots, when should I go back........ I just feel so ill. What is wrong with us? I realize new owners might not understand how bad that is, but the vets know. Sometimes I wonder if it isn't just the "low cost" clinic doing it because they don't know any better.

1. I learned that some people do not want help they want everyone to agree.

2. I learned that I will never buy another dog when I can adopt.

3. I learned that if could do it over again I would have rescued a dog instead of buying one but I do love my Dutch.

4. I learned that people who really love animals and work with them get angry but now I know why.

5. I learned that Y!A is filled with cliques.

6. Even though I'm mostly too chicken to speak up I learned most of what I know from the people who are the most outspoken. It took me a while to understand why some of the people here get so angry but I know better now.

1. I have learned all different kinds of dog foods that are good and bad for your dog. Because i studied that more, i switch to one of the best foods.

2. I have learned a lot about spaying and neutering animals. And other health problems that can occur when you don't give your dog shots, or when your dog has tapeworms...etc)

3. I learned that everyone's answer makes a total difference. Mostly everyone on here can be helpful. They give people the info they need to care for their pets, and make them the healthiest they can be. Icluding me. I am glad I chose to answer in this catogory, because if i didn't, my dog wouldn't be as healthy as she is now. I continue to study this section a lot more. I have learned:

That even tho some people on here and even in life can be hard headed stubborn people but we are people and we live together and share a world together.

When It comes to being a good dog owner never to reject the truth.
Never to judge people on how they like to treat their dog. Wether it be their style in a good way.
