Im curious to others opinions if you think you can actually learn MA or self defense well enough to be effective on the street without having a former teacher?

Oh i already agree, I just talked to someone in a different question a few days ago that actually thought that you could purely learn this way. I disagreed so i thought id put it to a vote with the community and so far you all agree with me that having a teacher is fundamental at one point or another in your training. TY.

well you can learn MA over the pc . But only the kind that will serve you good in the classical beat em up games. (square, square, circle L2) real powerful combo LOL. Seriously I think that books only serve their purpose for theory (and yes theory is important too). I had a brief discussion with my teacher and ine of his friends (a capoeira mestre) a little while back. My teacher claimed that there was no point in reading books to learn martial arts. My point was that even though MA is mostly physical, strategy and tactics are things that are both practical and theoretical and that they are just as important in individual MA as they are in battles and armies. Mestre agreed my teacher didn't which makes that I have to find me a portugese copy of szun tzu's art of war in a few weeks time. But anyways my point is that indeed books and reading can help you with theory but the rest is practice, practice and more practice with the help of a teacher

You can, but you have to be VERY determained, like my teacher always says, he isn't there so much to teach but to remind us of what we already know, if someone practices hard enough and has the motivation they can learn from books and on the internet, probably need a partener though to practice with but its not impossible
Sometimes the info on the internet is better than what the teacher is teaching also so you can get a better fighter that learned from books

If you have a true foundation already, as in 'you trained with a real instructor and learned well'... yes.
If then, you find a video, and what a video that would have to be, you can learn from a video. You can learn certain things from a book but not very much.
It also depends on what type of learner you are.
If you know nothing... forget it.

Of course you can't....however the internet is a good place to do some research once you have a solid base established. There may be certain things you want to learn that are possible to pick up if you have many years of experience and actually know what you're doing.

the main problem with learning over the internet is it also means you have no-one to practise everything on.. and no one is there to tell you what you are doing wrong with your technique.. really if you practice hard though and get some help from a friend it might be possible.
I would recommend taking a martial arts class of some sort though and then using internet resources for extra learning and to give you ideas, check your technique etc..

Some things can be learned from books and videos, but only if you have a solid foundation in the fundamentals with a good instructor and you have a sparring partner to practice with. It's foolish to trust your welfare and maybe your life to instruction based entirely on books or videos

No one can learn that way no personal attention to the detail or if you doing your part right. I mean they are good teaching aids or brushing up on things you already know. But otherwise you need a school and instructor to make it work.

I believe the Internet, videos and books are only supplements for actual training.

You may learn and do something that looks like karate but falls apart under stress situations. The important stuff come from your sensei and your dojo mates thru application. There are no short cuts.

you COULD just fight on the street every day from 6 to 8
think how martial arts started out in the first place!
Granted, formal instruction is usually faster and better
