People don't need meat to survive. We don't even need it to reach our optimum level of health. Most commonly, people eat enough meat to cause quite the opposite to happen.

Yes, humans ARE animals. The most advanced species in the animal kingdom and we have the ability to have compassion for the animals that are killed, especially when their suffering is completely unnecessary in the developed world.

The key category in the discussion of human diet is omnivores, which are defined as generalized feeders, with neither carnivore nor herbivore specializations for acquiring or processing food, and who are capable of consuming and do consume both animal protein and vegetation. They are basically *opportunistic* feeders (survive by eating what is available) with more generalized anatomical and physiological traits, especially the dentition (teeth). All the available evidence indicates that the natural human diet is omnivorous and would include meat. We are not, however, required to consume animal protein. We have a choice.

It's the same as asking why humans are different from other animals.

It's because humans have the capacity for abstract thought--to ask "why am I here, what's the meaning of life, is there a God, should I be a criminal or make an honest living, should I go to college, should I be celibate, monogamous or promiscuous, etc."

Animals act on instinct alone.

How far a human being wants to explore abstract thought is subject to his or her choice, level of intelligence, and conditioning.

I would have to say that the main difference is that Humans season, and cook their meat before they eat it.

No cause those animals are by nature meat eaters humans can choose a non meat diet...so there's the difference my friend. If a lion went vegan for a week he'd probably die

The difference is we have the choice not to eat meat. Our body can live of vegetables, cereals, legumes and fruit. A lion for example would have a hard time with that.

Another difference is that we are the only animals who torture our pray first, keeping them their whole lives in small cages and feeding them rubbish before looking them up in cramped van for hours before finally killing them.

Go vegan!

In theory yes- however Humans are capable of choosing what to eat and preparing it and animals can only hunt to feed themselves. As much as humans personify animals and vilify them as "thoughtful" they are lower beasts and kill to eat, eat when hungry and fall prey to the larger and more powerful beast. It may seem unattractive but it is reality.

The big difference is survival, we don't need it to survive.
Also, we are not meant to at meat, we have very long intestines and bits of meat get lodged in there, get all warm over time and just rot. That's why they invented colonic irrigation !
