Do you think its cruel, irresponsible, neglectful to allow a dog to be free instead of caged up or tied up?

Or, do you think its cruel, irresponsible, neglectful to always have a dog tied up or caged up?

Are you for or against either one of these......and why?

I am not confused. I know the difference. I was just asking peoples opinion.

I agree, a dog should be kept safe. Me personally, I dont cage my dogs or tie them up. They are kept safe, to the best of my ability.

I understand the difference between caging and crating but to me, they are about one in the same. It is still a small confined area and the dog is not allowed to be free.

I live in a rural area, I have larger breed dogs, my dogs prefer being outside. Capable of swimming in the creek or pond when they want or simply sunbathing. Being inside does not make them happy, you can see it in their eyes.

Either way, I was just seeking everyones opinion and it appears that most everyone agrees. And I agree with them all for the most part.

Thanks.

I think it depends on the situation.

I grew up on a farm and we let some of our dogs run free. (Small dogs like the toy poodle were kept inside most of the time, but the large dogs like the labrador, english setters, and german shepherd lived outside most of the time. The large dogs did come in when it got cold on winter nights.) It wasn't neglectful, we were outside a lot doing chores and such and the dogs got their exercise. They were given attention daily, during the summer, we'd often go on "family walks" down to the river and take the dogs for a swim. And we were far enough in the country that there were very rarely cars around either, so the risk of them getting hit by a car was minimal.

However, if you live in the city, I think it's a bad idea to let your dog run free. There are too many cars (the dog may get ran over) and too many untrustworthy people (people may steal your dog, hurt your dog, or worse).

Of course it's irresponsible to allow a dog to be free if by free you mean roaming the streets just waiting to be hit by a car. If by free, you mean behind a fence high enough to contain the dog, then of course, that's the way to go.

As for being always tied up, that's extremely cruel - ruins a dog's temperament faster than almost anything else to be tied up and constantly stressed out. As for always caged, of course it's cruel. It's not cruel, however, to have a dog crate trained for his own safety while the owners are at work. At least until the dog's old enough to be trustworthy in the house if he's loose.

Why would you limit choices like this?

A dog should be with the family, inside, but always either fenced securely or leashed when outside - certainly not running free all over the neighborhood.

No dog should be tied up or "caged", but that is very different from crated. Crates are fine for sleeping in and for keeping a dog safe if needed.

If you don't understand the differences between contained and cruelly tied up or caged, you need to read up on dog training and behavior, your question shows you are confused.

I don't think they should be caged or tied up ......I have a large fenced in yard for my 3 dogs. Some people tie up their dogs and they sit outside all day with no interaction whatsoever. But I don't think they should be allowed to roam the streets either....there are a lot of responsible dog owners who walk their dogs and my daughter walks my granddaughter around the neighborhood and every now and again a dog will come out racing at them and scare her....

so my answer is fenced in a nice sized yard.

I am against BOTH of these scenarios
a dog running free can get hurt or hurt someone/or another animal,,,even the friendliest dog can either frighten a child, elderly or chase and kill a squirrel or cat

however I dont believe in full time caging/tie-outs,,,dogs in this situation suffer pyschologically,,boredom, anxiety, agression can all be tied to this scenario

my dog has access to a fenced in yard- i dont believe in electronic fences either-because it doesnt prevent free dogs from coming onto your property

when im not home, she is crated but not more than 4 hrs at a time

I honestly think both are cruel. Dogs that are raised as pets do not have all the same instincts wild animals have. And taking away a dogs spirit by tying or caging him up all the time is just as bad. The best thing to do is to surrender the animal to a shelter/pound or find a new home for him. Its a free process and you don't have to take care of the dog anymore.

I think it's responsible to allow your dog to live in your house with you and to always have it leashed or fenced when outside unless you are POSITIVE it will either stay by your side or respond to a recall command. Plenty of people let their dogs roam, but that is inviting disaster. It is also, in most areas, illegal.

I think it is neglectful and lazy to leave a dog caged or tied all the time. Also tends to make them aggressive. Dogs need early and constant training and socialization, and an owner who can't or won't provide those things is no better than one who won't provide proper vet-care.

Well it depends where the dog is... if it's at the house of course it's not cruel, irresponsible, neglectful to allow the dog to be free. But if you're going to cage up the dog for life then i think it's cruel

I think that you just have to look at the situation...if you are at home and that dog is constantly pinned up in a cage, thats cruel, you dont get a dog to have nothing to do with it.it needs its freedom.on the other hand,if you are gone then maybe you should have the dog put somewhere.if its nice outside, put it on a runline,if it's not,put it in a crate or even in a bathroom or laundry room withthe door closed and any harmful objects out of reach.

Its definately cruel to have a dog chained or tied or caged. Its irresponsible for someone to allow their dog to roam freely. Dogs should be in a fenced yard, able to run and play without chains and ropes..You create an aggresive dog when doing so, plus the dog can get himself into alot of trouble.I believe in training your dog to go into a crate, for short periods of time, like for travel and night sleeping. but not all day..
