Whether for a boy or girl, try not to do any kind of character theme, but rather maybe their favorite color. If it is close to Halloween or another holiday, you can try to incorporate that in the decorations. Your best bet would be to ask the birthday person what they like and build a theme aroud that.
For example, if they love movies, the invitations can be shaped like movie tickets and you can roll out a (plastic) red carpet. Snacks can include popcorn, soda, and jujubes, etc.
Let your imagination run wild. Also, let us know what they like and we can help you better.
