I went to the doctor because I have been having a horrible time sleeping. The nurse took my blood pressure and it measures 145/95. However, I am always super nervous while at the doctor. So upon pikcing up my meds, I purchased a blood pressure monitor at the pharmacy.

At home while relaxed it measures 128/84 and ranged up and down a little until I went to bed.

Upon waking, when I was just getting up, it measures 119/74, but after I ate, had half a cup of coffee it measures 136/88.

So since mine seems to vary so much, active up and about versus in bed and relaxed, how does one gauge whether or not it is high?

Thanks

They're supposed to do it after you've been resting a while usually at least 10 minutes. It's not surprising that you're blood pressure rises at the doctor's office. It's common in fact they call it white coat hypertension.

145/95 is high but borderline, you're not that bad off. If you can loose a few pounds and exercise a bit more you'll probably be able to drop the meds.

Blood pressure can vary as much as 30 points in a very short time, your fluctuations are quite normal.

Its normal for blood pressure to vary. I take mine at night while I'm relaxed. A lot of people's blood pressure goes up at the doctor's from nerves. 120/80 is perfect--yours at 128/84 isn't bad really. My doctor put me on medication when it got to 145/90.

I had the same problem when at the doctors, but, High Blood pressure is nothing to fool around with. My husband has never had HBP, but the day after his 40th b-day he had a Heart Attack. He's fine now but has to take blood pressure meds to keep it that way. My BP goes up and down but my Dr. is just keeping an eye on it. I'm going to chance Dr.s because I don't think he cares as long as he gets his $$$

All blood pressure vary. You need to do a resting blood pressure to be acurate, the more active you are the more your blood is pumping. Wait until you have been sitting for at least 10 minute before testing.

It is normal for blood pressure to fluctuate. You do sound like you have border line high blood pressure though. Be sure to eat good and exercise.

Take the readings after you've been sitting for 5 minutes and NOT after you've just had a cut of coffee.
