What is GERD?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a more serious form of gastroesophageal reflux (GER), which is common. GER occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) opens spontaneously, for varying periods of time, or does not close properly and stomach contents rise up into the esophagus. GER is also called acid reflux or acid regurgitation, because digestive juices—called acids—rise up with the food. The esophagus is the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. The LES is a ring of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus that acts like a valve between the esophagus and stomach.

When acid reflux occurs, food or fluid can be tasted in the back of the mouth. When refluxed stomach acid touches the lining of the esophagus it may cause a burning sensation in the chest or throat called heartburn or acid indigestion. Occasional GER is common and does not necessarily mean one has GERD. Persistent reflux that occurs more than twice a week is considered GERD, and it can eventually lead to more serious health problems. People of all ages can have GERD.

Oh dear.

Yes, since the doc mentioned aspiration, breathing is involved. But if the doc isn't giving answers, nag him until he does or find one who will.

Chewing for a long time is probably what's keeping your mother's condition from being worse.

Now, I'm not a doctor. But my husband also has something that at least LOOKS like acid reflux. He can't take Prilosec any more: The stuff makes him sick. For a while he tried some other medicine, which didn't do a thing for him. But I get papaya enzyme tablets for him from the local health store, and that seems to help. Another thing that seems to help is chamomile-ginger tea, with honey.

Perhaps you can find a pillow for your mother too, so she can sleep sitting up a bit instead of laying flat.

Good luck!

It depends on the vaccine... A family friend has a son who developed autism after being vaccinnated, and there is more and more evidence showing a link. It has to do with the mercury that they use as a preservative for the shot--mercury is poisonous. I am due to have my first child in august and I am going to be reading very, very carefully about vaccines so I can be well-informed on the risks. Personally, I already am against most vaccines because I have seen the effects on the poor little boy of the family I know.

When my mother was in a nursing home they would puree alot of her food so she wouldn't have to chew it so long . My mother insisted on taking Tums but I think zantac is much better . Sometimes mucus can be coming from the nasal cavity . In older people it can help to remove it with a rubber syringe just like a baby .

If the Zantac isn't working then I would try Tagamet it is an similar over the counter H2 blocker. If it is going to work she will know it within 4 hours of first pill.
