I'd like to point out that 'we' or 'us' are as much a part of nature as everything on Earth and the Earth itself, both living and inert. Man and nature influence each other every second of the day in all kinds of ways. As far as, who is protecting who? Let’s see…

How does nature protect man...

The ozone layer around the planet protects us from harmful cosmic radiation, plant life filters the air and converts carbon dioxide into oxygen so we can breath, the oceans, lakes and rivers filter the air and provide food for us, the atmosphere burns up incoming objects from space before they can harm us, insects pollinate our crops so we can eat, watersheds gather and hold fresh water that we can drink, the gravitational pull of the planet keeps us firmly planted on the ground, the Sun heats up the planet enough for us to live on and gives plants the energy to grow so we can nourish ourselves and dogs have been known to die for their 'master'.

That's great, now how does man return the favour...

Sticks animals in crowded zoos before he kills them all off in the wild, blows up mountains so he has coal, iron and jewellery, chops down forests to make toothpicks, telephone poles and pasture-land so he has enough cows so everybody gets their Big Mac, wipes out or depletes whole species, dumps pollutants into all the fresh and salt water bodies on the planet, dumps pollutants into the air that life forms are trying to breath, breaks the spirit of an animal and calls it 'a pet’ (that’s as protective of nature as we get, I think), watches and bets on dogs or roosters forced into mortal combat for sport, dams every dam river on the Indian continent 'til there isn't room for one more dam dam (sorry, this kind'a stuff really bugs me), melts the ice caps changing the landscapes of both polar continents and shoots to kill anything moving in the bush during 'hunting season'.

In short, Mother Nature provided us with a Garden of Eden which sustained and protected a wide variety of life including man for millions of years. She is now struggling to protect man and Herself from man’s destructive ways. The future of the planet as we know it is in jeopardy and man must learn to overcome his self-centered, destructive, excessive, mindless ways! I guess wrapping the planet in saran-wrap is man’s idea of protecting her! Man is destroying life and eco-systems on this planet with blind impunity at an ever increasing rate …with no regard for repercussions he might be bring on himself.

There is no question as to who is protecting who and who is not protecting who. Man is selfish, blind and ruthless, like nature at times but unlike man ...Mother Nature has a soft nurturing side to!

Neither. We have evolved with all other life. All life is nature. If we are well adapted to the environment we will survive and propagate. If we poison our environment we better make sure we can survive in it. Natural forces can minimize some of the damage we do, but are all knowing powerful capacity to damage can exceed natural forces ability to make the earth livable.

You might take some comfort in the likelihood that life could restart and evolve into higher beings that would not destroy their own home.

Very good question. It's answer is that it is a two way street with the exception that mankind has "free will" over the situation regarding whether to protect nature or not and natural does it without using free will or for that matter...nature is just going about it's own business and helping us without really thinking about it.

Really, the nature is very complicated and consists of different elements which needs to be cared. The nature has provided a good range of opportunities and we need to conserve them, whenever the components of nature gets damaged or disturbed, people may get a lot of trouble for example, when trees have been chopped down, the water in the nature gets less and less due to which people gets trouble.
