i have decided to become a vegetarian and am looking at vegan diet. I understand why you wouldnt eat eggs becasue of the cruelty towards the hens laying them for us. but what about if you rescued a chicken that was de-beaked and had its feet chipped. you could look after it so that it wouldnt be harmed and it would naturally lay eggs for you that you could eat. and even though the eggs are meant to be for reproducing. you could get a rooster and create new chicks but for the time that the hen is not interested in reproducing it would still lay eggs naturally and you could eat those eggs? you would be looking after the animals and getting a benefit of being able to eat their un needed eggs!

Well, If you willingly consumed ANYthing from an animal... it would automatically make you not vegan.

I could answer this, but I think that this blog answers it as good and better that I could.

If you care about being vegan, which no one is going to force you to, you will never eat eggs. Instead, of eating them, you would give them to friends and family so that they do not have to buy factory farmed eggs. You would only do this if the hen shows no signs of distress when you take her eggs or when she notices that they are missing.

A vegan person would never let the animals that they take of reproduce. Just as one would spay and neuter their other animals, they would never allow a male to fertilize the eggs of a hen. If you wanted more than one chicken, you would adopt more that were rescued from the industry instead of creating more chicks that would need homes or take up all of space that you could be giving to rescued chickens.

Putting aside semantics and definitions, I'd say, go ahead and eat them if there is no rooster around (otherwise how will you make sure they are unfertilized) and if the hen doesn't seem to be missing its eggs. A more veganistic approach would be to donate the eggs to a non-vegan, but the choice is up to you. Although doing that is more symbolic than anything else, unless you have enough hens to make a difference.

Rome,

I don't support aborting human fetuses. And if by "extremist", you're referring to the first answerer, he's a carnivore. Just read his questions.

I'm not a vegan so I'm not sure how their though processes work toward cruelty and weighing out options, but i see it as this.

The chicken is going to lay the egg whether there is a rooster there or not. It will lay the eggs regardless of whether you are caring for it or it's on it's own. So instead of letting them go to waste why don't you eat them. They aren't fertilized so you aren't harming any chick fetuses. And it's just natural for humans to eat eggs.

Just think of it as a gift from the chicken^_^

there's nothing ethically or morally wrong with your senareo.. (I have a friend who has pet chickens, and I've seen that their lives are perfectly happy and healthy).. Unfortunately, you couldn't call yourself a vegan.. because the definition of "vegan" allows for the use of no animal products.. But there's nothing wrong with doing what you are preposing

Don't get a rooster.. It's no more wrong for a chicken to lay unfertilized eggs and never have baby chicks, than it is for a 13 year old girl to remain a virgin and "allow" one unfertilized egg to be flushed from her body every month!!

One last thought.. Can you emotionally handle looking at such a mutilated and pathetic creature every day? For me it would break my heart every time I looked at it.

Better to find some healthy chicks (female) that are set to be SOLD to a factory or otherwise might have a bad life if you don't adopt them, and buy a few of them.

If you want to eat eggs, go ahead and eat them. Nobody cares what you eat except you.

Just call yourself an ova-vegetarian instead of a vegan. Vegans by definition do not eat or use animal products, regardless of whether the animal was injured or abused in the collection.

This is a time to make your own moral choices. The "Party Line" of being Vegan is just that, you as an individual need to follow your head & heart too.
I have friend in animal rescue, she does it at great expense to herself. She is not even a Veggie, she keeps chickens for eggs, buys meat, fish, poultry etc. from the grocery stores. BUT she does amazing work with & for mistreated, lost & abandon animals of all types. Her home(farm) is a haven to 100's.
How do I compare her to a Strict Vegan who their only claim is they don't eat anything that has to do with a animal or insect of any kind?
THE PATH is what you make it in your life.

See, you don't get it. Humans are herbivores. Not omnivores as many (dumb) people suggest or 'think'. Biology 101 my friend. Sure, an ape climbing around in the trees will eat an egg once in a while, but it's not essential, probably just something fun and interesting to eat when spring comes around. Ant on their finger, they'll probably eat that too. Do they need to -- no. Neither do we. We have essentially the same digestive system as chimps, and they eat, what, 97% fruit. Fruit is what you want. Also, living in a nice warm tropical area where there is fruit all year around on the trees would be nice too... but we're scattered all over the planet now, so we have to eat what we can get.

Vegans don't eat eggs, but if you have your own chickens that you treat well and want to eat the eggs go for it.

You won't be allowed to wear the vegan badge, but you can still be a member of the ssve.

It isn't vegan to eat those eggs, but it's certainly less cruel than battery cage eggs. Please don't get a rooster to breed your hen--what would be the purpose, to have more hens to produce eggs?
