Jamie Foxx was on Conan O'Brien or some late-night talk show last night. Foxx's 40th birthday was coming up, and he was throwing a party with the theme "New Jack City", his favorite movie. Well, "West Side Story" is my favorite musical and movie. My 50th birthday was last December, and though I haven't had the big party yet, I'm still thinking of doing it.
So...with a "West Side Story" the theme, how would you handle the party: food and cake, decorations, clothing, music, etc.?

Everyone dressed up as Jets and Sharks and since it's your theme you and your hubby can be Maria and the other guy (sorry forgot the name)... Your food can be latin and american or latin-american.. good luck and have fun!!!
oh yeah and for your goodie bags you can give away the movie to all of your guests!

Watch the movie again and take notes on the type of clothes they are wearing, especially any semi-formal wear. You can hunt in the re-sale shops for vintage clothing later that is similar or make your party outfit. Serve ethnic Carribean food, especially those of Puerto Rico (which I'm sure, you can get from the people at yahoo.) As far as music, you can tie in the theme with a mix of the original soundtrack of West Side Story and Latin American music, which is easily available. Since the most well-known scene included the song about being in America, your decorations could be based on that, perhaps even with small flags, Your cake could be decorated with a small Statue of Liberty, either piped with icing or a little statuette sitting on top, since it represents the gateway to America.

Clear out a room and cut out large pieces of cardboard to resemble New York skyscrapers like they were seen from the rooftops on the movie. Kind of New York up your place. There are plenty of downloadable pictures of New York from during that time period and put them up around the place. Everyone can basically dress like its a late 50's party the guys wearing wife beater T-shirts and leather jackets. Why not have a "greasiest" hair contest. People could use jel there and come out as a real greaser for a few good laughs. Sounds like a fun idea. Maybe combine it as a combination Halloween party because everyone will dress up for Halloween (at least I do)

Ok West Side Story is like Romeo and Juliet expect it is in New York and it is not 2 families but 2 gangs that should make it clearer any questions ask me more
