If vegetarians claim to be such because of animal treatment, then they don't drink milk. The diary industry is very cruel to dairy cows. They are penned in stalls so little they cannot turn around or hardly move. They are constantly empregnated in order to keep them producing milk. As a mammal, cows do not NATURALLY produce milk all the time. Once the calf is born, he does not get the opportunity to nurse with his mother. He is taken to a small pen and tied up where he will later be used as veal - cutting his life very short. The dairy industry is closely related to the veal industry.
Besides all the ethical reasons, there are loads of health issues that keep veggies from drinking it. It has artificial hormones because the farmers manipulate the cows to keep them lactating. It is also VERY unclean. It contains blood and puss - because the cows are milked SO much by brutal machines, they often develop sores and blisters on their udders. It costs money to take care of that, so most dairy farmers ignore it and milk away....allowing the contents of those sores into the milk. A recent study showed that milk being sold in about 20 states would not pass basic standards to make it sellable in Europe (b/c of all the questionable material it contained).
So, there you have it. Two REALLY good reasons to steer (no pun intended) clear of it.

Vegetarians drink milk, vegans do not.
It is true that drinking milk is not like eating the cow. However, both cause cows to suffer. Killing the cow is worse.
As for cheese some (but not all cheese) contains an rennet which is not dairy but comes from a the lining of the cows stomach. Vegetarians won't eat that type of cheese.

Possible explanations: Some are allergic to dairy products. Some don't like the taste. Some (and correctly so) know that milk is not necessary for healthy adults. Human females make milk for babies. Then the babies are weaned. Then in a normal state, people no longer need milk. Another reason is that cows are pumped full of hormones to keep them producing milk. Those hormones are fat soluble and are NOT healthy. Milk is high in fat. Those toxins and hormones get passed on to you. Then there's the fact that some of these animals are kept in poor conditions. So that is why some people don't drink milk.
Personally I think the whole milk thing is a bunch of rubbish. You don't need it to be healthy. In fact milk is NOT healthy, unless you have your own cow eating toxin free feed milking it without hormones.
Note: Soy milk is not healthy either. It's soy, soy is high in phytoestrogens. Too many phytoestrogens can cause health problems. There is also the fact that soy is high in oxalates. Oxalates and contribute to kidney stones. Rice milk is a better choice. Too many people treat soy like the vegetarian answer to everthing. The truth is it's not all that great.

Vegetarians can drink milk and eat cheese as much as they want. It's vegans who don't. There are different levels to vegetarianism, incorporating various different sets of beliefs/values and restrictions. Full out vegans believe that nothing coming from an animal at all is acceptable for their consumption, including the things which don't do direct/overt damage to the animal, such as milk.

I'm a vegetarian and currently I do drink milk, however, since learning that even dairy cows are being mistreated I will soon begin replacing it with some other type of milk. I did want to add that I don't eat eggs and it is a misconception that all vegetarians who eat dairy foods also eat eggs, this is not rue. Vegetarians who eat both dairy and eggs are ovo-lacto-vegetarians. Vegetarians who just eat dairy but no eggs are lacto-vegetarians.

As a breastfeeding mom, why would I allow someone to steal the milk from my own kids to give to someone else? Why would I want to be impregnated constantly against my will just to be able to continue milk production after my baby gets stolen away from me? And why would I want to be connected to some pump numerous times throughout the day for my milk to not even go to my own species (again stolen from my kids)? I wouldn't, so then why would I condone that practice upon another mother (of any species, a mother is a mother)??
Edit: So this winenut guy below me says info is biased, but does the milk get given to the calves when you are drinking it? And do they not have to pump the cows in order for you to get it? And of course, in order to continue production of milk (whether the calf stays with mom or not) after weaning, either the mom has to be A.) pumped with the proper hormones that keep lactation going, or B.) impregnated so she can naturally make her own hormones after baby is born to produce milk. Milk productions only lasts so long when strictly pumping without hormone help because the pumps do not efficiently remove milk the way baby does, so her body stops producing milk over time. Either way, it sucks! And this is all common sense for me as I breastfeed, as do all mammals and all mammals are so named for mammary glands that work almost identical throughout every mammal (the only real difference is the compilation of nutrients present in the milk as well as how much of which hormone gets the process working successfully).

Cow milk is intended for baby cows, not humans. Besides that, consider the ethics of how these animals are treated, as a well as pumped full of hormones to keep producing milk.

I agree with sleepingliv. Not natural and it's bad for my skin. Whenever I have too much dairy, my skin breaks out. So I use soy or rice or almond milk. It's good once you get used to it, and Purely Decedent Soy ice cream is really yummy. Did you know that milk contains a large amount of puss? You see cows are made to produce x amount of gallons, but farmers want them to produce so much more them what they are capable of doing and remaining healthy. So they use hormones so they can produce more milk. Unfortunately udders are made to hold only so much milk, and their teats get hurt and sore from having so much milk pass through them, and the teats get infected , puss-like and bloody. So the farmers inject them with antibiotics to cure the infections (although a large amount of puss gets into the milk anyways) and as a result, we get a high does of antibiotics in our milk. Then our bodies get immune or used to these antibiotics. So if and when we get an infection and go to our doctors for antibiotics,...often it wont do us any good because our body has gotten used to antibiotics and they no longer work...ooopppsy. So don't lose a limb or get an abscessed tooth or anything if you drink alot of milk. It's not worth it to me, and just the idea of puss in the milk..blleehhh.

VEGANS do not drink milk
Vegetarians use cheese, dairy, milk , and eggs in their diet. "Vegetarian" is short for "lacto-ovo-vegetarian" Which by definiton is someone who consumes no meat, but DOES consume dairy products and eggs..
The reason VEGANS don't use milk: The cows are constantly impregnated (Beyond what's "natural" for them), injected with hormones to make them produce more milk, and their calves are taken away from them right away (The boys to become veal, the girls to become dairy cows.. They consider it inhumane.. and also unhealthy, because the cows are usually sick, and the hormones, etc...

I am a vegetarian, although I do eat eggs and dairy - a "Lacto-Ovo vegetarian"
I don't drink milk though because it really upsets my stomach and I don't know why. I used to drink it, then one day - no more. I make sure I get enough calcium.
