Most shopping areas are reachable within 10-20 minutes depending on where you are staying. I would stay somewhere near the BTS Skytrain or MRTA subway because of the traffic in Bangkok day or night. And take a taxi when you have to or hire a sedan at your hotel for the day or half day. Because parking in Bangkok is a premium and a hassle.
Having said that, if you like the noise and people of downtown. You can stay at the Pratunam Princess Hotel which is connected to the MBK center or Mah Boom Khrom Center. That is a 4 star hotel.
From MBK it is a short walk to the Siam shopping centers, a long walk to Pratunam shopping for clothes. A taxi ride to Khao San Road or the Grand Palace. And there are a lot of restaurants and good shopping in MBK Center. The Skytrain's both lines connect at the next stop, Siam station.
You are able to easy go north to the Chatuchak market which is only on weekends. Or the Night Market at Suan Lum.
Then again staying at any hotel along Sukhumvit/Rama I between MBK and Asok Road near the BTS stations would work too.
Depends on your budget. I personally stay away from Sukhumvit. It's too noisy and smoggy down there. I stay at the hotels along Ratchadapisek road. The MRTA subway runs parallel to it and it is at most a 15 minute ride to the Sukhumvit Station.
Since this sounds like your first time. I would stay along Sukhumvit.
Do not stay at hotels along Petchaburi Road, the prices are alluring but, you have to take a taxi everywhere and it is time consuming. Walking 5 minutes to a Skytrain station or subway station is much faster.
Try www.asiarooms.com for your reservation or at least compare, they have the hotels based on area too. And they have reviews of most hotels they list.
Good luck

I would recommend Rajdamri or Pathumwan area for easy acesss to almost anywhere. But of course that rate may be slightly high. Or you can stay any hotel with walking distance to sky train/sub way station...that would be a big big convenient.
Some recommendations:
Anoma Hotel, rajdamri road, 5-min walk to Chitlom Skytrain station.
Rembrandt Hotel, Sukhumvit 18, 10-min walk to both sky train and subway.

There is no "central" place in Bangkok. It is a big city with different attractions situated in diffrerent areas depending on what your interests are.
You can stay anywhere. Getting to a tourist attraction is not a problem in Bangkok.

extremely some human beings like the Ambassador yet I actual have in no way stayed. My chum stayed final week on the Salil hotel in Soi 8, small compact room for around 1400 baht. I had a seem on the room and that i might think of roughly reserving in destiny. they have a unfastened tuk tuk to take you to Sukhumvit highway, even nonetheless that is not too a the thank you to stroll the two and is only next to Nana BTS station so is actual handy for paying for around and stuff to do at night. I additionally went to Amphawa floating markets and stayed in one day at Baan Imoun, that's a small Thai run guesthouse on the river. that is on Agoda and grow to be additionally approximately 1400 Baht. a tremendous place to pass to, yet you likely could organise a motor vehicle and motive force to get there. the main vacationer floating marketplace is Damnoen Saduak that's additionally interior of sight and that they've many excursions to that place. the two are approximately ninety minutes outdoors of Bangkok on a thank you to Hua Hin.
