ok, IM's are welcome regarding this question. I have not tried to meditate yet but plan to start with a 20 min tries. I've been doing alot of reading about Vipassana and feel I have a loose understand of what it is and how to start but I'm confused about a few things and i feel like I'm missing something. Please help.

Is the only thing to do is to focus on the breathing and the nostrils? I know it helps clear the mind but what do you do then? Wait?

Is just trying to focus on breathing a very hard thing to do?

What happens after you get the focus on your breathing thing down?

Am I eventually supposed to see some kind of "sign"?

What kind of preparation is there?

Thanks for your help and IM's are welcome regarding this question.

vipassana meditation is a subset of
vipassana.

by the way, vipassana meditation will
help you to vipassana.

You must understand that the main goal of Vipassana is to reach nirvana (free from attachment) because you realize that nothing really exists, nothing is truly yours, and nothing lasts forever.

However, there're many levels of vipassana, that improves your mind and concentration in everyday life too.

1.Is the only thing to do is to focus on the breathing and the nostrils? I know it helps clear the mind but what do you do then? Wait?

- Focusing on the breathing and the nostrils is just the first and easiest step to vipassana. There're 4 levels of Vipassana. (Body, Mind, Feeling, and Dhamm) You can also focus on your mind, your feeling (don't confuse mind with feeling), for me, the mind is easy to focus.

I started with the breath btw. Once you focus on you breathe. You'll feel the peaceful feeling, free from thought. Then if that's the only thing you want, then you don't have to do anything else.

But if you want to go further you should notice the change of it. For example: There's a pause between breathing in and out. That's where you notice that it's not always there. It can be lost.

DON'T try to control your breath, just look at it. Sometimes they're long and deep,
sometimes they're short and shallow. It's always chanigh just like everything.

That will lead you to the perception that there's nothing you can hold on.

You'll go to the deeper states of meditation as you practice more and more.

2.Is just trying to focus on breathing a very hard thing to do?

- No, it depends on the person and the state of one's mind. At first, it was hard for me. My mind was always wandering.

3.What happens after you get the focus on your breathing thing down?

- I don't get this question. please explain more.

4.Am I eventually supposed to see

some kind of "sign"?
- It's totally normal to see some signs. Somes meditate especially to see the signs or gain supernatural power (might sounds ridiculous for you but it's true).
The sign might come without expectation for some
people in scent, feeling, picture etc. Not everybody expierences it.
You can enjoy it if you want to. But
i don't recommend it because that's
just a waste of time and you might
get stuck with it.

5.What kind of preparation is there?
-a quiet place and a free time for vipassana meditation, but for vipassana alone (to see things as they are) you can do it anywhere and anytime, yourself is like a vipassana
laboratory.

Vipassana is very deep.

Hope this help. If you want to know
more you can ask me. Excuse my poor English though.
Good luck.

It's not too hard. Everyone can do it if they need to do.
It look like every one can draw a picture but some one draw the beautiful picture just because they has high skill in drawing.

The practice is a way to have that skill.

When the mind get the concentration completely, it will pure and met some happiness. In this mind you can do another practice with high effective.

In buddhism they try to have this skill for seek their enlightenment by do the vipassana or insight meditation that bring to fully understanding of your self and liberate your mind from attachment that cause suffering.
