Ok, first, I am a Christian. I have some questions though.
According to some Christians I know, alcohol and tobacco, or the excessive use/addiction of these substances is a sin. Everything in moderation, right?
How come SO many of these Christians I know are extremely overweight (excessive/uncontrollable eating) and are addicted to coffee (in my opinion, caffeine is a horrible addictive substance). The number of deaths caused by obesity is up there with cigarettes and alcohol. Why do these people then scoff when I have a glass or two of wine with a nice meal?????? Are they being hypocritical or am I not getting something here? Please, no answers from Christian-haters.

I agree with where you're coming from.

I'm a Christian as well, and I have no convictions over drinking a glass of wine with dinner or ordering a mixed drink at a restaurant. I never get drunk and allow myself to act in a way that is contradictory with my beliefs.

Overeating can be an addiction just as much as smoking, drinking, or drugs. Anytime something becomes an addiction that you can not stop of your own free will, you're coming pretty darn close to idolatry. Just like its wrong to turn to alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes when the going gets tough (instead of turning to God), its wrong to find your comfort in a Mickey D's drive thru as well.

But honestly, we all have our weaknesses. There isn't one of us here who doesn't have something we could stand to work on. That's why I think its so important not to judge other people. Anyone who stands in judgment only sets themselves up to appear a hypocrite.

...everything in moderation is fine, it's when we over indulge in any one thing we get into trouble.
Alot of people have good intentions, but let things slide, sometimes until it's too late.

But maybe they scoff at you because they really want to do what you do, but would feel guilty if they did. Does having a glass or two of wine make you feel guilty?
Most people have a 'vice' serious or not, whether it's a piece of chocolate, a coffee, a wine, a ciggarette or even hearty doses from the bible which could end up killing them or runing their families. Some vices are just considered to be worse than others, depending on your point of view.

One should not judge others. Anything which is more than required will affect the system.God has given us free will to each and everyone. The question is how we are using it.

The road rule says don't overtake on certain places. it is your free will to overtake or not, but the rule warns that there is a danger in that place.

The cigarettee container states as statutory warning that "cigarett smoking is injurious to health" whoever hear the warning will not smoke. We have to think twice before doing.

You are absolutely right. Gluttony is a sin. Obesity is often - not always - the result of the sin of gluttony. Addiction to coffee - or sweets - or sex - or anything else besides God and His Word- is sinful.

We live in a very depraved society.

:)

I used to think that "no rule/law" in Christians belief ...

since you bring up this topic, I wonder if the law was not properly implement due to western people (mostly) pick up any kinds that they think only good for theirselves... not base on the g-d's word and ignoring other g-d's word... where they don't have strong faith it is god's word ... I guess...
