When these all started years ago they always said it was dealers stealing from dealers....Is that still the case? Or are regular people being targeted?

You are pretty much correct.

I have been a cop in a major Florida city for a long time.

The whole "home invasion" and "car jacking" thing became very popular about 15 years ago. The home invasions in my city were 99% drug or drug money / proceeds or gang retaliation related.

I can count on one hand how many of them in my city that were of innocent people.

To this day, home invasions are all about dopers robbing dopers. The rare cases that they were not, they were actually Armed Burglaries where the suspects didn't know that any one was home until the home owner showed up... or woke up... then it became an armed robbery.

But, the idea of armed thugs randomly targeting innocent people to just pick out and do a home invasion on are very, very, very (did I say very?) slim.

It's very similar to why George W Bush needed to invade Iraq to keep the USA safe from Al-Qaeda(who had no connections to Iraq). I think gun owners like self reliance but they have insecurities too. As for home invasions, most people that do that know you(and break in when you are on vacation) and the rest are insane or on drugs.

Drugs target anybody as long as there are profits.
