No. It could have been but numerous setbacks have made it hard for the PS3 to eclipse the PS2.
The PS2 was legenday because there was nothing like it! Nintendo cornered the market for family friendly games but the PS2 was the console all the rest got. They cornered the mind blowing graphics, violence loving, sports playing crowd. It wasnt until the xbox came around did the ps2 have competition and even then the ps2 had such a stronghold, the xbox couldnt touch it. And most importantly, the PS2 had INSTANT CLASSICS in its arsenal. The two that immediately pop into my head are the Final Fantasy series and Grand Theft Auto series.
The PS3 on the other hand, is no longer offering something we havent seen yet. They're online play is sub par compared to Xbox Live. They don't have any exclusives, a small game library and they have nothing revolutionary like the wii. The only thing that the PS3 offeed was Blu-Ray player and Sony seriously overestimated the impact Blu-Ray would have (which at this point is almost none). The only people who buy Blu-Ray disc are PS3 players. And that hefty price tag was a major negative for the PS3. Why pay that much money when Xbox with its massive game library and exclusives (Halo, GTA, numerous Xbox Live add ons for games) and Wii (with its revolutionay controls and the system to get for the family) is MUCH MUCH cheaper? And now losing GTA to XBox (one of series that amde the PS2 legendary and, I think, would be the game that would make people wanna get a PS3) is now gone. They're only hope to turn it around...a REALLY REALLY GOOD FINAL FANTASY GAME. And even then, I think it's a lost cause.

It may sound crazy but PS2 actually got off to a worse start than PS3 !
Sony Playstation has always made games that push the envelope. Othersfollow the popularformulas set forth by successful Playstation games.
Sony is ambitous and has the consumer in mind when desiging products. It shows in the quality and user friendliness of all their products, not just gaming systems.
I'm still impressed everyday by the new things I find I can do every day on this machine. PS3 is great. I can't wait to see what the years bring.

When the developers start taking full advantage of the processing power, the sixaxis controller and the massive Blu-Ray disc capacity, then it will become legendary.
Right now, gamemakers are having too much trouble programming for it, so it's kind of early to tell. Wait until Square puts out the two Final Fantasy XIII games or when Rockstar puts out their PS3 exclusive or when Insomniac makes a sequel to Resistance: Fall of Man.
Those guys are going to show what the system can really do. That's when we'll find out what's legendary and what's not.

yes it will, it is already pretty famous as the first games console that uses blu-ray discs for gaming and its bluetooth motion sensing controller and a cell processor made up of 8 separate processors.
