There is always something to do. You discover America and learn about it's wonderful people. You learn about yourself when having to deal with obstacles and setbacks. You learn to appreciate nature and the history of the places you travel through. You learn to enjoy new foods. You learn to become adaptive and self-reliant. You grow, and sometimes you just read a good book.
