Its like this. You have to believe in it in its entirety, in order to fully "understand" it. So, first try to find a way to gloss over the bad stuff just enough to be able to actually believe it. Then when you read it, you'll be able to understand it from a Christian perspective.
Its that simple. I wonder why more atheists don't try that...
Edit: About the glossing over part. I should let you know that the Christian euphemism for that is, "guided by the Holy Spirit". ;)

Anyone can read it but only those with spiritual understanding will be able to correctly interpret it. How do you get this understanding? By believing in Jesus Christ and then receiving the Holy Spirit by asking and receiving in faith. I tried to read it my whole life and found it to be hard to understand and boring but one day at 9:00 am in Enfield, Illinois while I was at one of our oil wells, I was reading the Book of John and my eyes were opened. It was January of 1985 and cold outside and I was sitting in a car with snow on the ground and the sun was out. I remember it like it was yesterday. I couldn't put the Bible down for 8 years. I still do not read anything else but the Bible or Bible related books to this day.

If you are to gain understanding of any knowledge or great work one really needs to study it and that includes reading it a few times. I recommend one should be able to quote the passages that resonate with themselves so they can meditate on the information and come to truly understand from where it came. Sometimes I have found that the ideas were not the truth and must have been added to cause confusion trying to direct the student of life off the path of truth.

Most people read out of context, and if you are not willing to let the Holy Spirit guide you and open your eyes you will not understand. You can be the smartest person in the world and not know what anything means. So you can read it but you won't always understand what it means. I am not saying that you will not understand anything that you read in the bible. But there are some things that you won't know because of the above mentioned.

Acts 8:30-31 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

That is a catholic belief. They won't let you read the Bible without a priest present to tell you what it means.

This is the truth.
This is the truth.
This is the truth.
You are incapable of understanding it except with the Holy Spirit. So if you find yourself understanding, how long will it be before you yourself are Christian?

Yes you need to read the bible only while wearing your "christian eyes" Only then can you truly distort the passages to mean whatever you want them to mean.
