I no longer hunt, but that is what got me out into real wilderness areas and gave me an appreciation of nature. Just sitting and thinking and dealing with all the issues of life, death, and providing for family were pretty heavy things for a young teen to think about. I never regretted hunting for a moment, but I was always careful to avoid hunting with idiots who would spoil the experience for me. And that is part of hunting too - learning the measure of a man.

My favorite part of hunting is: when I am out in the wild in the territory of the deer/elk/grouse/turkey....I have to know the habits of my target. I have to think like the game, and then out think it. So saying that, a good hunter has to know outdoor skills, be proficient at his/her weapon, and above all he/she has to know safety. Put that all in one, and that's my favorite part of the hunt....the thrill.

Being truly a part of nature and getting away from this artificial existence we have created for ourselves.
Sunrises, fresh air and lukewarm coffee from the thermos.
Good trusted friends who don't need to speak a word for hours and you still know what he's thinking and going to do.
The planning, preparation, anticipation and successful execution of a mission. Even if the mission is not successful!
The thrill of the stalk and the exhiliaration of the kill.
Eating, preparing, cooking and sharing the fresh harvest.
Smoked Elk Jerky!
Pissing off ugly disrespectful people like 'Cats' above. You may share your opposing opinions all you want. I will fight for your right to have and speak your mind. Resorting to ugly name calling and gross stereotypes is ignorant, intolerant and violates Yahoo rules....

I think my favorite thing was the silence. Due to work I could only go a few times a year but that made it ever more worth it. I would go to the mountains where cell phone and pagers would not work. The camp I stayed at usually had a few other hunters but they were there for the same thing. It did not matter if I shot anything or not. Fresh air and sweet silence.

I dont think anyone ever truly enojys the cleaning of the animal, but other than that, I love it all. I love the peace, listening to the sounds of wildlife (birds singing, squirrels chattering, even the armadillos rustling around usually tickle me). I love the rush of adrenaline as you hear something approach. I love the light that shines from my husband when I take a nice buck, or a large nanny. I love it all!!!

Being in the woods is probably the most fun. Secondly would be the harvesting of game. My least favorite thing is cleaning the animal once it is killed. After that, the fun returns at the table.

The tall-tale-tellin' around the supper table with dear, deer friends. ...It didn't really matter if anybody had a successful hunt or not... -It was mostly about this fellowship anyway.
