Actually a lot of atheists are hippies, like me, and try various ways to help prevent that kind of thing.

I am a bit of one of those atheist hippies who does try to do their part to alleviate the pain and suffering in the world that I can address. I am just one person though so there is only so much I can do, its not like I am a God or something. I think some degree of pain and suffering is built into nature but not to the degree it exists. There is much that could be done to improve and alleviate suffering but praying isn't going to do it.

That's somewhat misrepresentive of atheists.

I "allow" pain and suffering as much as I allow Uwe Boll to continue to make bad movies at the expense of the German government and the majority of gamers' sanity. I can't do anything about it no matter how much I contribute (and I do contribute, thank you very much).

Considering this is an attempted blow to atheism, how about you theists get off your backsides and do something about the growing HIV epidemic in Africa by allowing your missionaries to distribute condoms? Promoting abstinence doesn't prevent cross infection.

Wow, that's an ignorant question. What do you think only you kristians help the world? I've seen and known plenty of atheists that make donations to charitable causes, such as the food bank and homeless shelters (the NON religious variety) as well as volunteering their time. I have also noted plenty of supposed kristians that don't do a damn thing to help...oh except pray. Do something tangible. Do you think your g-d will help the homeless when you could do it yourself? What kind of shirking of responsibility is that?

lots of crimes and wars have been commited in the name of christianity. it has been used to repress, abuse, and other atrocities against others. the bible and its stories are sexist and repressive to women. if i was nothing more than property then your so called god would have given women the brain of a child or animal, but that isnt the case. by the way, buddhism is the oldest religion in the world. so how did god create the world if that is the case.

What makes you so sure that I, an atheist, don't help people in need when I find them?

Why are you so smug to assume that...
when someone is hungry, I won't offer them a meal?
donate to charity?
donate time to volutneer programs?
support people who are down on their luck?
give spare change, or even substantial amounts of money to charitable causes?

How DARE you!!!!
You think christians have the market cornered on altruism?

The only difference between you and I is that I don't need your Big Brother, Ever-Watching Eye in the Sky, Imaginary Friend to convince me to be kind and fair to my fellow human being.

I do it only because it is the right thing to do, and not out of fear of going to Hell or guilt from your scriptures.

Now, you tell me, who is the better human?

I do, if I can. Sometimes there's nothing that can be done.

Prayer doesn't count, you're just talking to the air around you. Instead of praying, get off your knees and do something yourself. "God" would appreciate the initiative.

Your analogy is flawed - if your god existed, being omnipotent, he could stop all pain and suffering. Humans, theist or atheist, cannot.

I'm trying to minimize, at least, religion-induced pain and suffering.

I do.
I give to the poor.
I donate to shelters.
I adopted an abused dog.

However, it's very exhausting trying to put 'band-aides' on all the gaping wounds which religious people are causing!!

Who says that we do not do what we can to prevent it?

Not being an omnipotent deity makes it a lot harder. It is a shame that there is not one of those around to help.
