I don't want to do a weights-based workout necessarily.
Just want to know what exercises I should do to complement my classes and make me a better jiu jitsu practitioner.

isometrics goes hand in hand with martial arts. there are many things that you will experience that will bring you beyond your own pain threshold. this contributes to the spirituality that is developed through martial arts.

Muscle mass depends a lot more on the type of exercise you're doing, rather than when you do it. My son actually works out both before and after--a combination of strength training and cardio. However, in your case I'd suggest working out after. Assuming your jiu jitsu class is fairly strenuous but also covers technique, you'd want to be in the best shape to be able to participate. You don't want to come into the class already tired. Come into it fresh. Learn and practice while you're sharp. Then, afterwards, exercise and work out. Hope that helps.

the best work out for Martial arts is cardio and you can condition your muscles by doing sets of sit ups and push ups. Now you can incorporate this by going to the local track and sprinting down to one end of the track stop and and do 25 push up and 25 sit up.. than walk around the bind than sprint down the other side of the track when you reach the bind 25 more sit ups and 25 more push up.. this will condition your cardio and wind and strenghten your body just right. do this 6 times or for just 1 hour only.. any cardio past 60 minutes will actually destroy your heart and muscles giving your an adverse affect.

I would have to say stretching whenever you can eddie bravo always says that flexibility is one of the most important things you can do when competing in high level jui jitsu, not only will it help you get out of submissions much easier but it will also make your triangles, gogos, and other moves like that easy.
