I'm going on a cruise in Nov.
I've gained quite a bit of weight since my last suit wearing.
I have to get another one for the cruise. Is a tuxedo more than your average 3-piece suit? I will probably never wear the tuxedo other than on cruises and perhaps one of my children's weddings in the future.
Any comment?

Yes, buy the Tux. You can find one if you shop around for about the same price as a suit. I know I did and now wear it on every cruise, sometimes twice and on those other rare occasions that come up when its appropriate. You can wear it with the real fancy shirt for formal and a less formal shirt and tie on other occasions. For me it was worth the approximately $160. I paid for it.

Just buy the suit. You don't need to have a tux on formal night on a cruise - or any other night. My husband has never worn one - he always wears a sport coat and tie, or a suit.

you can find one probably costing the same as a good suit. On a cruise, its really nice to wear the tuxedo.

On formal night you will see most men (myself included) in a dark suit. I would say no more than 15% will be in a tux and you will see a handfull in full military dress. Now if you are going on a Cunard ship or Seabourn the percentage of tux to dark suits will flip if not all will be in a tux.

unless you are going on a very expensive cruise line like seven seas you do not need a tux unless you want to be super dressy

Don't waste your money on the tuxedo, especially if you will never wear it again. Invest in the suit, you'll get more wear out of it.

You can rent a tux & have it delivered to your room before you check in. If not, I think for the formal nights you can get away with slacks, tie, & blazer (if you have one).
