All in all it all really depends on how big the piece is and where it's going. i haven't watched those shows in ages because they really leave out alot of stuff about the whole tattooing process and what generally goes on in a tattoo shop. most of those pieces take many many hours to finish and yes most of them do require more then one session, a ball park estimate of about 15-55 hrs. most artists won't do anything after inkin in the outline because colors can mix together and that's not what they want. typically what they do is outline and put in some black or grey DEPENDING on the piece and tattoo artist. it's funny that they make a big piece seem to take so little time when really even a small piece takes a while since things have to be set up and skin has to be cleaned.

That's the problem with those shows - it gives people a very skewed reality when it comes to tattoos. No one would watch if they truly showed the process of doing big tattoos from start to finish.
They also make it look like people just walk in and get a tattoo drawn up in 15 minutes - which is also not reality.
I haven't watched those shows in a long time because I couldn't stand how everything is so set up and staged.

The whole show is staged. A drawing for a big tattoo in five minutes? Ha! Hardly. Those tattoos take hours to tattoo, they obviously edit it to make it go by quicker. I think it's funny because it makes people think tattoos are quick and painless.

Oh, I'm not a tattoo artist, but I've heard some of them say that a tattoo, around the size that would take up half your arm, would take about 2-4 hours, depending on the detail, color, etc.

Depending on the size & complexity of the tattoo, it can take weeks!
I have a peacock on my right leg that runs from my ankle to my kneee, & that took 4 & 1/2 hours. The ones that they have on these shows, HAVE to take weeks!

obviously they can't air the entire tattoo process on miami ink, do you think that on remodel shows it only takes an hour? it's tv. different artists have different tattooing speeds but this is my husband's tattoo. it goes from his ankle to his knee and it took 6 hours.

Totally unrealistic. If you think you are walking in and getting a back piece with just 20 minutes of work by the artist...loco. Also not every tattoo has great personal meaning.
