so last night i gave my dog a bath and then cleaned his ears with just a little bit of the drops (i havent cleaned his ears in a while so i figured he was due for a cleaning...). this evening, everytime i touch the base of his ear he yelps and cries and runs away... obviously in a lot of pain! there isnt an oder and he hasnt been scratching it... so do you think it is an ear infection and do i need to take him to the vet asap? or do you think his ears are just sensitive and it will pass? thanks for any help! im so worried about my little boy!

dear blake: i am a college student and can barley take care of myself, let alone taking my puppy to a vet right now. i would have to save up money to pay for the visit. therefore... i wanted to know if there was anyone who might know anything or possibly has gone through the same situation. i was just asking. obviously, if it continues or worsens i will find a way to take him... i was just asking for some helpful advise.
he seems to be doing better this morning. when i pet his ears he doesnt even flinch. but he is acting a little lethargic. thanks for everyones help!

Since you just cleaned his ears last night, and there is no odor and he isn't rubbing it or scratching it. I would give it a day or so before I got too worried. Keep an eye on his hear. If it starts to look red or swollen, take him in asap. You may have scratched his ear when you cleaned it. If he still yelps when you touch it in a day or so. Take him in to see the vet.

I have to clean my dog's ears constantly ... and I use some stuff my vet prescribed. But, still, once in awhile his ears get infected, no matter what I do.
I guess you could wait a day or two, but if your dog is in pain, wouldn't you take him in to the vet to see what the problem is?
You'll probably end up having to, anyway ... so why wait? The vet can look inside his ear and tell what is wrong ... if his ear is infected, the vet can give a prescription that'll clear it up in a day or so ... please don't wait. Putting it off will only mean that your dog suffers pain for a longer time. Won't affect the outcome.

It was only last night. That seems too soon for a full blow ear infection that hurts him that badly. What kind of drops did you use? Did you use any ear swabs? Some dogs are babies. He might be freaking out when you touch his ear simply because he never wants his ears cleaned again. I think it's too soon to tell if it's an infection. Give it another day see if he feels better, then go to the vets.

I don't think you are going to get the answer to your problem on here. You are being very responsible, by taking your dog to the vets. The only suggestion I could make, would maybe be to get a second opinion. If you are in the UK there is a programme on BBC tonight about the super vets. They have all the leading vets, and deal with lots of things the normal vet cannot find answers for. Good luck

It's possibly an infection.. (I know that one time I almost lost hearing in my own ear due to massive infection that I didn't even feel.. just a vague change in how things sounded so it's not always going to be noticeable in a dog either)
I'd call the vet and ask if they would prefer to see him about it.. They may tell you to just keep watching it for awhile..

Vet. Probably ear infection. A lot of ear products sold over the counter may be intended for ears, but that doesn't mean they are any darn good, and some are downright detrimental.

You should probably take him to the vet and have his ears checked it is possible that a insect or some kind of bug has homesteaded in your poor pups ear. It does happen. Good luck and get the bug out of his ear..

I'd take him to a vet, there maybe something in his ear that you missed while you were cleaning. We had a dog who kept getting foxtails (weeds in our area) in her ears. She never showed any signs of discomfort until we either cleaned her ears or sometimes when we pet her head/ears. It never hurts to take them to a vet and make sure there isn't something serious going on with their ears.

I believe it's an infection so you should take him to the vet ASAP! It may be something more than an infection.... good luck!
