I was just diognoised with an underactive thyroid - and my doctor said this is more than likely the reason I havn't been able to lose weight - so my question is, when and if he places me on medication, will I begin to lose weight?? I eat healthy and exercise, just can't lose it due to this reason.

Thyroid medication will not usually help with weight loss just by taking the medication, though a rare few lucky few have. It's not the norm though. What it will do is help you to lose weight by diet and exercise. It's important though to be at the right thyroid levels. Your first thing in the morning TSH needs to be around 1.0 if you want to lose weight with diet and exercise.

If you still cannot lose weight after 6+ months with a morning TSH of around 1.0 then its time to test free t4 and free t3. If the free t3 is below midrange that could e the problem. A T4/T3 med like Armour usually helps this. It is adjusted by the free t4 and free t3, not by TSH.

Another thing one can look into is insulin resistance. Sometimes the weight that was gained from the hypothyroidism causes insulin resistance. With insulin resistance it is difficult to lose weight. Testing for this is a fasting insulin and fasting glucose.

My mom has that, and she's on medication. You have to take it everyday. And trust me, it wont help you lose weight.. it helps you maintain it. But the only difference is that if you dont take the medication, your weight will increase rapidly! and if you do take it, your weight will not increase rapidly.. but it will increase a little more every year.

So, what I think you should do is, go to the gym more often. Or, join a dance class. Belly Dancing? Yoga? anything that keeps you happy and helps you lose weight.

And, to let you know, thyroid messes around with your memory.. so, you may be starting to forget things pretty easily. If not now, then probably in a few months. So, you need to sharpen your memory by reading books, doing math, yoga helps to sharpen memory as well.

Hopefully this helps. :)

Once your medication is at the correct dosage, you will have the same ability to gain or loose weight as anyone without thyroid problems.
