You don't want to bang your head in the cockpit from turbulance which would crash your plane before reaching your target. Which wouldn't do jack for your country. What if U.S. planes encountered them and he had to get into a dogfight before reaching the ships?

The helmets aren't just for protection. They keep your ears warm, too. Didn't ya ever wonder why pilots wore thick flight jackets, even on a 90 degree day? It's cold up there.

It was to protect them from the cold of high altitude flight. Fighters were not heated nor pressurized. At the altitudes they flew the temperature is well below freezing.
Example B-17's the at the altitudes they flew the temperature was 35 degrees below zero in side the plane.

seems to be along the lines of 'why sterilize the needle used for lethal injections of a murderer?'
but think about it, the pilot needed to live long enough to deliver the weapon - that's the reason for the helmet
thank God very, VERY few made it.
it was a horrible war - glad it's over.

Planes are very loud. The helmet absorbs sound.
I don't know if they had radios in their helmets back then. Probably not.

the helmets were leather with a lining and it was for protection for the cold at altitudes and not banging head. so they had to at least stay alive until they acquired a target. DUH.
