I have recently been told I have an under active thyroid problem - due to Im guessing, gaining 150 pounds in a few years time, being pregnant back to back 3 times and using the excuse to eat any and everything. I have been trying to lose weight for months, but am not able to, and my doctor said the cause is because my thyroid is underactive.... how do I fix this without medication?.....

Kathrine, for your information, I was completely healthy before gaining this 150 pounds, and yes, I believe in medication, but I have just recently developed an underactive thyroid - because for the past 2 years, I doubled my weight - and my doctor hasn't placed me on meds yet anyways...lol but I love how you're so quick to judge - I was just wondering if there was a way to help my thyroid problem before my doctor decides to place me on synthroid meds or not....

I know you don't like the idea of medication, but it really can make a difference. If you want you can go with a natural medication that has been around for years. In a few countries, its considered an anti-anging supplement. It has no side effects when on the correct dosage and it can take care of most symptoms. I have been on it for 4 years and got relief of most of my thyroid symptoms. Previously I was on the man-made meds with no relief.

Another problem relating to weight is insulin resistance. The extra weight the thyroid condition caused can cause insulin resistance. It happened to me, so I know. I was exefcising for an hour a day with no weight loss, so I went through things one step at a time. I got the thyroid right, and no weight loss so I looked into insulin resistance by having a fasting glucose and fsting insulin. Diet and exercise can help with the insulin resistance, but for me it didn't work. I went on Metformin ER and lost some weight that I couldn't lose before. I gained about 55-60 pounds with the hypothyroidism. So far, I'm down 30 pounds with 25 more to go. I'll also put a link to a weight loss thyroid forum if you can to check it out.

I know you wanted to know how you fix this without med. Sorry I didn't answer your question. I really feel you need to fix the decreased hormone level first and then if you desire do things to slowly taper off the medication. Somtimes it can be done with iodine and supplements like selenium, but I really wouldn't mess with this until your thyroid has a chance to recoup itself because using iodine when you don't need it can make things worse, especialy if you have high thyroid antibodies.

Making dietary changes is your first line of defense in treating hypothyroidism. Learn here https://tr.im/HsAb2

Many people with hypothyroidism experience crippling fatigue and brain fog, which prompts reaching for non-nutritional forms of energy like sugar and caffeine. I’ve dubbed these rascals the terrible twosome, as they can burn out your thyroid (and destabilize blood sugar).

1. Just say no to the dietary bungee cord. Greatly reduce or eliminate caffeine and sugar, including refined carbohydrates like flour, which the body treats like sugar. Make grain-based carbohydrates lesser of a focus, eating non-starchy vegetables to your heart’s content.

2. Up the protein. Protein transports thyroid hormone to all your tissues and enjoying it at each meal can help normalize thyroid function. Proteins include nuts and nut butters; quinoa; hormone- and antibiotic-free animal products (organic, grass-fed meats, eggs, and sustainably-farmed fish); and legumes.

Why would you want to fix it without medication? I take the medication every day. It's not a big deal, it's one pill in the morning and you wait an hour until you eat. It costs about 50 cents a day without insurance. If your thyroid tests low, all you have to do is take the medication. What? You don't believe in medication? Well, you don't need to believe in it in order for it to work. If you break your leg, do you believe in casts? You have a medical problem, get it solved. Unless, of course, you like being 150 pounds overweight, in which case, enjoy being sick.

My guess is that the thyroid problem is the reason you gained weight and can't lose. It's no big deal to take a synthetic thyroid hormone supplement.
If that's what your doctor recommends, please follow his/her recommendation.
