I turned 18 on September 8 this month, and I have always been fascinated and captivated by the sound of a Cello. I've always wanted to play one, but have never had the opportunity or the money to do so. I'm hoping to get a job soon so I can save up for one and finally be able to play it.
I'm kind of a late bloomer in the whole music scene. I started band in 8th grade (usually you start in 6th grade) and I have been working really hard to improve myself over the last 4 1/2 years. I love everything about music, and I really want to continue to play in College in a Marching Band & Symphonic Band of some kind.
Can any Cello players out there give me some advice about buying a Cello, tuning, finding good teachers, how much I should be ready to spend, how long it takes to learn fingerings (I'm a woodwind player mostly, but I play some brass too)

Anything would be greatly appreciated! :)

I played a cello in high school for 2 years (and played flute for 9 years). You really need to have a teacher, at least to teach the basics of string instruments because it is very different from woodwind or brass instruments.

The hardest part for me was making my small hands fit around the neck (main reason I didn't pursue it after high school). Fingerings weren't too bad to learn. I think after a few months of twice weekly rehearsals I knew most of the important ones. Tuning is easy.

As far as buying a cello, they are expensive, and in my opinion you should rent one or play a loaner through your music program first, to see if you really enjoy it.
