The benefits are some pay, training, and fun while still in the reserves. If and when you are called to active duty, you might be very surprised at what you will be doing and where. Just check the papers and you will see what I mean. I feel the reserves have now been transformed into an almost full time active army. The regular army cannot meet all of its personnel needs from volunteers. Thus, they have to dip into the reserves, including the National Guard. IN my humble opinion, you would be better off joining the regular army for a set enlistment. Factor in the required reserve time for which you will be obligated after your enlistment is up. At least you will initially be able to pick the specialty you want to follow. Remember, that some of the combat specialties are dangerous and even some non-combat specialties become so when units are in a war zone. Beyond all this, you should join with a sense of patriotism and be gung ho. Both will make Army life a great deal more understandable and easier to take. Think twice and then thing again before falling for one of those cute, teenage southern girls so many GIs seem to marry. First thing you know, she will be pregnant and you will be a career man.
But if you learn to love your career and keep loving your wife, it isn't such a bad deal, is it?

I think this would be a noble pursuit if you did it for the right reasons: namely, to defend your country and become a full-citizen by volunteering your service.

You should be aware of the fact that reservists are going to be seeing action, not having parties at the armory. You may be asked to make great sacrifices.

If you should join up, then good luck to you. You will gain much in wisdom and self-esteem. You will know what it is like to trust in others for your survival. The material benefits are just icing on the cake.

Benefits - free food and clothes.

Downfalls - your mother weeping when they hand her the folded flag from your coffin.

If you are going to fight for your country - make sure your leader is sane first.
