it stems off of how the poor people had to work in the hot sun and got tan, but the upper class stayed under umbrellas etc. and were more pale.
HOWEVER, in Japan, there is a popular fashion called Ganguro fashion!!!
i absolutely ADORE Ganguro fashion.

Well aside from the fact that most asians are already dark skinned to begin with, old customs dictate that tanned people are only those who work in the fields or outdoors. They are composed mainly of farmers, fishermen, and manual laborers. The implication is that you are poor or of low standing as royalty or the rich do not work in fields hence don't get a tan. This may be true way back in the past but certainly does not apply anymore. Besides, it is so easy to get a tan in the normally sunny weather that lotions are hardly necessary.

You mostly want what you don't have..
Because asians already have dark skin they want to make it lighter, which means a bigger range of whitening products are more easily available and there's no request for tanners etc..
where as in countries like the US/Australia/England etc.. the majority of the population has white skin and there is a bigger request for products like fake tan.

because some Asians are already tan or olive skinned, and there's more of them who would want to whiten their skin rather than darken it. but that's just only for some Asians, others want to darken their skin, but not usually most.

Everyone wants what they don't have. Reoccurring theme much? In the West, being tanned is a sign of health, attractiveness, athleticism, wealth, etc. Anyone "exotic" or "different" is glorified. (Pale is thought of being normal & boring, lots of people are like this.) In Eastern cultures, being white is the rare, different thing. Also, the white standard of beauty suffocates women of the world, which is just ridiculous.

They are usually already quite deeply pigmented people. I have tons of Filipina friends (A.K.A. little brown girls) online and the trend there is to bleach their skin to whiten it. I just think all women are insecure with the way they look, as worldwide they are bombarded by constant media suggestions that they can improve this or that to be "better" in some way. It is also an economic statistic that the whiter you are, the better off you may be economically.

asians already have naturally sun-kissed skin== not so dark and not so light or white.. which is less susceptible to skin cancer so asians have an advantage...
you can actually see tanning lotions from department stores or malls with boutiques specializing in skin care and drug stores... you can buy a sun tanning lotion from a boutique or drug store selling a sun block lotion...

Could be they just like their skin the color it is. Could be they would rather be lighter. And maybe they just don't enjoy the prospect of getting skin cancer, wrinkles and sun spots. Can't say I blame them.

tanning lotion or sunblock lotion?
asians in general like lighter color of skin. darker color is perceived as unattractive. maybe it's old culture and heritage, who knows.
