BARF is a bit more than what you stated. It also includes pureed vegetables, organ meats and no kibble. Generally you inhance the diet with some herbs, fatty acids and a few select vitamins. Billinghurst favors more of a balance thats achieved not in every meal, but over the course of several meals.I really don't have a problem with the diet and have used it. I was just selective in the bones I used. Raw chicken necks/wings I preferred over some of the other bones suggested. I gave my GSD a turkey wing and found it to be too sharp looking. My dog loved it, but I only let her have so much of it. This diet also includes a fasting day. One thing that I have always stated about feeding this way is to research tremendously before you ever put anything in your dogs bowl. There are a tone of web resources as well as a ton of books out there. Two books that come to mind are put out by Kymathy Schultze and Tom Lonsdale. Volhard has a decent book, too.Theres Pitcairn, too, but he favors more grains than most which some don't care for. There are various ways to feed raw, too. Some prefer a modified raw diet that doesn't include raw bones but raw meat, pureed veggies and kibble. I see a lot of mixtures on the market now where all you need to do is add the raw meat. This diet isn't super cheap, but managable. I always gave organic organ meats whenever possible and bought good quality supplements. I suppose I weighed cost against vet bills. Generally dogs (and cats) on this diet remain very healthy with good teeth and coat. Rarely will you see any skin allergies or tartered out teeth. Hope this was helpful!

The reason people spend money on the barf diet is because they have not thoroughly researched the diet and do not really know what they should be feeding or how much. The prepacked or pre made stuff is suppose to be measured and fully formulated to meet the dog's dietary needs. Plus, they think it is easier than to go buy the meats and bones themselves.
I agree that it is very expensive and the dogs are not getting the raw bones that they really need from the barf food they are buying so for that they may as well buy dry dog food.

I do not spend money on it at all> I have been feeding my dogs so long on a natural diet, I mean raw foods, I never even thought about using barf. I do tell people to go read about it so they can get an idea of what it is about and how to strat.

I don't think I'd ever try the BARF diet.... I wouldn't trust myself that way, I buy Life's Abundance and Wellness for my pets, that way I win with not having to worry about measuring and vitamins and whatever, and my pets win because they get balanced healthy diet.

Some people think that just because its expensive that its better. I don't pay ANY money for my raw meat and bones.
Everyday the butchers at my local grocery store give away their "meat scraps" for free in the afternoon. Not everyone knows about it where I live because they don't make an announcement or put out signs about it, they just give them to whoever asks them for it. I come their almost everyday and push my cart to the meat cutting room and ask for them, then one of the butchers carries a large heavy cardboard box of assorted raw meat and puts it in my cart.
I get a mixed box of beef, chicken, pork, and sometimes fish and turkey. A lot of times I find steaks in there like T-bone and pork chops. Sometimes they'll accidentally slice them too thin and can't sell them, or other times they just cut some of the meat off the T-bones, and leave me with the bones with an inch of meat still coating the bone. A lot of times they give me a bunch of chicken parts. One day I got a lot of salmon because one of them cut it wrong and couldn't sell it.
My dogs are 100% healthy from it, and its a lot better than feeding them commercial dog food that contains too much unnecessary fillers and chemicals.

Im assuming that you are talking about one of the frozen or freeze dried diets. .. its all about convinience.
If you are gonna go raw, you might as well just go to your grocery store/ butcher shop. You can get deals on meat, and freeze some of it.. you also get more of a variety that way! With raw diets, variety is the key!
