I have read many times on this forum that we are no longer required to keep the law in order to have eternal life and yet here is what Jesus said when asked the same question...
Matthew 19:16-19 Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life? Why do you ask me about what is good? Jesus replied. There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments. Which ones? the man inquired. Jesus replied, Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself.
For those who believe we are no longer under the law, can you explain Jesus response to this question?

"For those who believe we are no longer under the law, can you explain Jesus response to this question?"
Sure!
Jesus was telling the man what anyone could have done to have eternal life. Jesus was the one who actually did it.
What was the man's response?
20"All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?"
Can we say that the young man was very 'young'? He was under the impression that he was flawless, unless Jesus could come up with something. Jesus was very perceptive. (To say the least!)
This is what Jesus said:
"If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
Following him meant that he would teach him that he (Jesus) was the only way for us imperfect people to be perfect. Perfection for sinning men comes by faith, and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He had already said that before.
So the young guy was sad, because he had much to lose, and just think about what his relatives would say! Especially his father. He would never hear the end of it! (so he might have thought!)
The Law wasn't followed perfectly by anyone until Jesus came along.
I see these verses as a transition from he Old Covenant to the New Covenant that was coming, and had already arrived.
So Jesus told the young chap the truth, first according to the old way, and then in the new way: The Gospel way to have eternal life.

At that point in time the law was still essential for salvation as Jesus had not fulfilled Gods will in that he had not been sacrificed for the sin of mankind, after that we entered the gospel of grace. All who believe in Christs sacrifice will be saved through the grace of God.
This does not mean the Law is done away with,it means that no longer is the law a burden to keep for as believers in Christs atoning sacrifice the law is wilfully followed,it still serves as a compass for our morality.
In this Christ perfected the law he did not make it obsolete.

Some say that The Ten Commandments were replaced by two as it mentions in the Bible.
Commandment 1.) Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, mind, and soul.
Commandment 2.) Love thy neighbour as thy self.
From these two commandments the other ten will automatically follow as one wouldn't normally steal from or give false testimony against someone who they loved.
The Ten Commandments are still relevant and always will be but to simply things one only has to remember what Jesus himself said.

The scripture you quoted goes on to say that the man considered that he had kept the law but still did not think he had eternal Life. Christ told him to give away his worldly goods and follow him. And that's what would have given this man eternal life.
We are all still under the law. It's only by belief in Christ that we can begin to obey the law.

Repent of your Sins, and confess Jesus as your Lord and savior and pray asking him into your heart , and live your life for him,
Seek out a Bible believing Church they may be able to help, i think he told the man this to get the man to answer his own question, bein that he knew the law, and knew to go to heaven at that time he needed to keep the law, but what Jesus did was freed us from the law, and through Jesus we are able to go to heaven and will essentially turn away from our sins because we Love God

Some say faith. Others say works. Actually it is faith that works.
"We are no longer under the law" means we are no longer under the condemnation of the law but by no means free from its obligation. Otherwise it would mean that Jesus died so that we might freely break the law. That is not why Jesus died. An analogy would be - someone who is found guilty is allowed to go free instead of being punished. Does it mean he is free to commit the crime again? No.
The difference is, we do not keep the law in order to be saved but do it to show that we are saved. Jesus died to save us FROM our sins, not IN our sins.

That is a good point, if you're arguing semantics. All peops already have eternal life. Not as people though.
These wonderful laws are meant to give eternal life to a society, and to give you a better eternal life.

Mankind was still under the law of Mosses at that time ( The old covenant).
The new covenant was not established untill after the death of Jesus, his death and resurrection finalized that.
Therefore, Jesus' answer was very correct, at that time.

Yes. You have to remember, one must compare scripture to scripture in order to understand a certain doctrine fully. There are many, many verses in the bible that tell us exactly what it takes to be saved, i.e., repent of sin and believe in Jesus.
This entire story was about a man's heart and where his "treasure" lay. He was very rich, and Jesus saw that right off. What Jesus said to this man was in essence, to give up the idols of money that were so important to him. As Jesus taught, and as the bible teaches, we are to have no other gods before the God of heaven.
"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved". This man was trying to gain entrance to heaven by his own works.

Get out of the catholic church. you may not be saved via Mary or the catholic church or any element that the pope says. She replaced right into a sinner as surely all and sundry else is. She additionally had to receive Christ as her Savior. you have a Bible? initiate via interpreting John financial disaster 3
