I joined the Navy because they had the program I was looking for, and at the time, they were the only active duty branch that could promise you a rate. Other branches could promise you a field, but not a specific MOS, and all I wanted to do was be a linguist. It helped sway my decision that my mom and dad were also Navy, but I looked at all branches before choosing the Navy.

Some people join branches based on family history, or machismo.. other join because they think they know what life will be like in one branch vs. another. I do think that the quality of life offered on a Navy base is a little bit higher than most Marine or Army bases, and not so great as the Air Force, so that helped ;)

Navy, rather than the other branches? Take a look at how popular the boating shows are, and how many people go into as much debt for their boat as a house. And in the Navy, you get to go out on the big people's water, not just some little lake.

But you also don't have to suffer through MRE's. The food is a lot better for the most part. While infantry is shooting at each other on land, ships sit 20 miles out in the water and lob shells 4 miles inland to soften up the beach.

Schooling is every bit as good as an Associate Degree, and even Bachelor Degree in college. Very useful when you get out.

Promotions aren't as fast as the Army as the Army loses more people at the end of their enlistments. But they're a lot faster than the Air Force. And, in your off time, you get to act pretty much like a civilian.

Can't speak for the Navy now, I was in 45 years ago. Can't think of any reason not to join. I can counter every one of the ones you have been given so far. For example: You get sea sick. So did I but then you get you sea legs and are fine. I was on a tin can so I know what rough seas are. Sea duty is boring. Not so. You will be working 8-12 hours a day, if not more. You will make friends, shipmates for life. I am still in touch with some now, 50 years later. You can spend hours playing cards, not boring. Go out on deck during darken ship, in the middle of the ocean, at night. No light anywhere other then more stars then you have ever seen and the fluorescent wake of the ship. Six months at sea. On my first six month deployment to the Med. we spent 28 days at sea on NATO exercises with the British and French navies. The next five months were in the Med. We hit about 12 ports, some more then once, in Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Turkey. That is more then two ports a month at about five days each. So that comes out to be about half our time in port. Roaches in the kitchen? No. Ships have galleys not kitchens. I could go on. My two years on that little tin can were the best years of my life.

Im not really sure what you mean? joining the navy is no less important than army, marines, or air force. it depends on what the situation is. for example, if russia were to send some of their MASSIVE fleet of submarines and warships to launch missles at the US, it's the united states navy that would protect us. further, i'm not sure how much you know about fighter jets, but whenever we have an "air battle" like in world war 2, world war 1, etc, it's the navy fighter jets that will protect us. it's NOT the air force. the air force would be used primarily to drop bombs from a much higher altitude. it's kind of like the movie "top gun". the fighters protecting us are NAVY. Generally, the army, marine, and air force pilots won't compete in "dogfighting".

3 hot meals a day not MREs
A bunk with covers not a foxhole on a cold night.
Getting to drive the most awesome piece of metal on the sea.
Standing on a metal deck not sloging through mud.
Clean clothes not muddy or the same dirty clothes for three days.
One or more steel walls between you and someone shooting at you.
Bigger guns to shoot back with.
Missiles to shoot back with.
R2D2 (phalanx CIWS)to shoot down missiles fired at you.
Getting to make fun of the jarhead that can not walk on water.

priceless

Sea travel is cool.
Ships stand off-shore about five miles and toss shells and shoot off cruise missiles. No one is shooting back.
If someone does try to shoot back, the planes from the carrier will get to them first.
Takes a lot to sink a ship.
Did I mention sea travel?

It's a unique experience.
