Yep. I agree. People NEED belief in something. It gives them security and comfort in a world that they do not understand.

Oh yes! I thought virgin birth and sacrificing an only son in a crucifixion were way out, but then I heard about the Sati of Hindus where they throw women on their husbands' funeral pyres or doused with kerosene and lit.

Worse yet is the Scientologists, who believe that aliens came to Earth and established their religion. And of course, the Aztec and Mayan cultures, where virgin girls were tortured and sacrificed to gods on a regular basis.

I find most religious belief systems preposterous, and yes, I think that people WANT to believe in something, ANYTHING, as long as all their friends, neighbors, parents and leaders believe it too.

Or say they do. I believe that the Flying Spaghetti Monster and the Invisible Pink Unicorn fall into the latter category. I strongly suspect some other religions do too. Since I am convinced th FSM and IPU people don't expect us to believe that they believe, I don't mind mentioning them. But I'd get in trouble if I singled out any other religion for this, because they expect us to take them seriously, and they have their First Amendment rights. So while I have freedom of speech to tell them how irrational they are, they would have their freedom of speech to tell me how evil I am. I don't want the bother.

I understand that most believers are devoted to their own religions, not just anything.

Obviously, based on some of the conspiracy theories out there. People believe what they want to believe.
