Grain free is the best kind. I know it is more expensive, but the stuff you get at the boutiques are usually better. The people are usually more helpful as well and have lots of knowledge on the food itself. Most brands like Bil-Jac, Purina and whatever else is at the local PetSmart has grains in it and they may say they use only chicken baked at a certain temp, but it is usually not true. Another added bonus to buying more expensive food is that you usually use less, I think it has something to do with the grains not being in there, but I am not too sure.
Good Luck in your search!
Also, when I was searching for my dogs food, I asked them if I could get some samples to take home to see if my puppy would eat it or not (he is picky, I know I know it sounds ridiculous, but he is!) which was very helpful. I put three different foods in front of him and which ever one he ate first is the one I have given him since!

Heres are things that should NEVER be in food
Wheat
Corn
any type of meat by product
Artifital colors
artifitial flavors,
more than 3 grains
Just to let you know Beneful contains all the things I mentioned so don't buy that. Beneful is kind of like greasy potatoe chips that someone spray some liquid vitamin.
It cracks me up. In the concerial they are all like "with rich CORN for carbohydrates, and SOY for protein!,and PACKED with wholesome grains and "Real" cuts of teneder meat!" All the meat in there is meat by products!
ExpectationsThe first two ingredients must be a named meat. for example you should never buy any thing with "meat meal" or meat by products or meat broth. Because you never know what animal that meat came from. It's kind of icky when you think about it.(it could be a rat ot an a dog that they had to put down or some road kill WHO KNOWS.??
SO buy meat and meat meal only if it says the animal it came from
Good choices
Canidae all life stage(what I feed and LOVE)
Innova
Innova Evo
California Natural
Timberwolf
I know you guys will be shocked to hear this but eagle pack contains CORN!
And if your some rich dude BARF would be fine.

The dog foods that start their ingredients with corn are not good. Meat by products are not good either. Ask your vet. Mine gave me a list of unsuitable foods. You would not believe the name brand dog foods that are on this list. It also listed by foods what was wrong with them. I am not at home so I cannot write what they are.

As dogs are carnivores their food should contain little or no grains, dairy or vegetables. These are unable to be digested properly and this is linked to many health issues.
I hope these links help with the information you are after ...

it shouldn't have corn or alot of by products. you want to find a food where meat is the main ingredient, primarily it should be the first 3 or 4 ingredients listed.
