Maybe that it makes people happy and gives them a reason to think that life is meaningful.
Or, maybe it could be considered more important to note that religion has lead to millions of needless deaths. That's a pretty important aspect of it.

the most important aspect of any religion is usually to follow a certain set of standards and/or codes of conduct in order to appease said religion's god(s) and to further one's spiritual growth for personal betterment, social service, and/or possible reward.

meditation, with out knowing your self you cant know others
being kind towards others ,because we are all alike, we all love ,hate, cry, love our children, feel sad, etc, we are all the same, this is what religion should teach [teach sameness]

I think different religions may answer this question differently. In Christianity, it is the promise of salvation through repentence of sin and faith in Jesus Christ.

In "religion" in general is the ritualistic works based on "do's & don'ts" called "legalism". In the genuine -true Christian faith, it is faith, grace and Jesus Christ, called "spirituality" - a relationship with God, the Father, through Jesus Christ, based in unconditional love - not legalism !!!
