As commendable it is to help the starving countries around the world, I think we should first concentrate on our own, our people...
Start by making a differences in your own community then you can escalate with your experience into a state level and so on.
There's many upon many single mothers, homeless people, children, elderly people, people with disabilities... and all of them in institutions in need of not just hard cash, but also needing food, clothing, instruction or just reading or visiting someone.
-Volunteer even if it is to read or visiting someone...
-Collect can goods and clothing to donate...
-Make projects at school involving as many as possible to help out our people...
-Help out the needy, the elderly and the handicap in your neighborhood...
Contact a small institution without much and ask them what you (and your friends) could do for them, and go from there.
In my own experience, the human contact is the greatest need from people in need, or sick or in just a bad time throughout their lives...
I think if you start with your own people, us, your country, you'll know deep inside of you what I mean.
It is awesome to help out other countries but, what about our own neighbors, friends, and our children? They deserve a chance also, don't they?

There's a limited amount of things that someone can do from thousands of miles away. Carefully research a charity before you give it money, so you can feel good about where it's going. Also, organizing a fundraiser to raise funds for a specific cause or country (at school or in your community) will get more money than you could individually get, and it'll get more people involved, and could even be fun.
Also, I know that maybe you don't see as much need around where you live, but sometimes it's good to just accept that you can't do much right now to help people and try to help in your own community. Start where you can actually do something, you might be surprised at the things in your own community that need to get done, and if you get some volunteering experience now, maybe someday you can travel to another country to do work.
And, finally, just keep updated on current events. Stay politically active. Influence our government, because they really can do things to help in other counrties.
and it's good that you're interested and want to be involved. keep it up!

I don't, because instead I choose to help all the people living in poverty and worse right here in the US.
Excuse the minor rant, but when did people in our own countries become LESS imortant than people in other countries? yes, it is sad that there are kids eating out of the dump in other countries- BUT THEY EAT OUT OF THE DUMP HERE TOO!!
If you want to help a charity, start with one close to home. Help provide clothing, food, toys for homeless children in your own city. Donate a toy or 10 to Toys for Tots. Take your outgrown clothing to Goodwill. Volunteer in a local soup kitchen - especially on a holiday, and especially during winter.
Talk to your school counselor, who will know where to find info on how you can help.

you can sponsor a child, which not only benifits the child but their family and community... if you cant afford that you can buy packs, such as health care pack, mosquito nets, a cow all that changes lifes... unfortunatly for the whole country to change its up to the governments, we can help the people, but for long term relief of the country we need to pressure governments. good luck
oh and its by LAW that a certain percent of charity donations HAVE to go to the benifit... with world vision, you get photos and letters and you can see their improvement..

Don't think like "I'm ONLY 15" because kids your age can (and do) do SO much! There are youth-run organizations all over North America that kids your age and younger started. Good for you thinking about other people and what you have compared to them. Most people your age aren't thinking about that sort of thing.
Don't donate to charities inside the country you're considering. Donate to the ones that are in your own country who will then distribute the goods directly to Africa. Amnesty International is great, as well as Invisible Children. You may want to look into those.
I suggest trying to get involved with Amnesty International. You can join marches, letter writing campaigns, and do other volunteer work. I've been attending protests, rallies and marches (all peaceful) and involved with other activism work since I was about 13. You're not too young to get involved! Ask if they'll take volunteers at your local chapter.
You could also start a Students for Africa coalition at your school. I had one at my school and it started with just three of us! Then it grew as word spread. Even things like bake sales or car washes raise money and it can go to Amnesty or another organization for a specific purpose. If you donate $50 to Amnesty now, you get a 2-Disc CD called Instant Karma (look for the link on the front page) and you could use that CD for school dances and stuff. (It's got all the big names like Green Day, Avril Lavigne, etc.) Students often get involved if there's something in return for their work.

Good to see an unselfish teenager!! I would suggest finding a charity group in your area and volunteer your services and your time. Your school probably offers credit if you do community service and they might be able to suggest places that need your help.

I think your aspirations are commendable and I disagree with all those who said that you should help Americans first.
The poorest Americans are better off than people in many other parts of the world where there are no opportunities to improve one's situation in life.
And even a kid can make a huge difference. Check out this website for Ryan's Well Foundation -

Why don't you start in your OWN country? It's nice that you want to help others, and at your age, something like that is rare these days. Start at home. Volunteer at a homeless shelter. Help clean up your community. Donate old clothes and food. There are a million ways to help. Like I said, start at home, and worry about overseas later.
