Mental health of a person who has lost his job can vary so widely. This may depend on how much of the person's identity came from his job. Depression can consume the person who loses his identity when he loses his job.
Other people have a full life apart from their payed position, and are less dependant on the job for their sense of well being. These are the people who will likely fare better and with less of a depression, viewing their unemployment as a temporary bump in the road of life.

You experience fear, anxiety, hopelessness, confusion and many other negative feelings. I lost my job at Standard Oil when they merged with BP. I never recovered my status and eventually had to settle for a crummy job with a lot less pay. No one wanted to hire me because I made too much money and I was overqualified for most office jobs. I changed jobs several times and became schizophrenic and had to go on disability. That's where I am today. I often wonder if I still worked for Standard Oil, would I have gotten schizophrenia. It may have been caused by the trauma I experienced from losing my job and then my house.

Losing your job is a tremendous stressor that can effect your overall mental fitness. It is especially bad if it was a lucrative position with great benefits and if you are a man. Men suffer a great deal over job loss. They tend to define themselves in terms of what they do for a living and when that ends, it is hard for them to see that they will go on.
