Right now he works at Firestone as a tire tech... He makes $350 a wk w/ no chance of advancement. The other job is about $300 a wk w/ chance of Advancement. He actually has a good chance of advancement, but it's all chance! We could make it for a while on $300 a wk, for about 10 months. If we made it and he got an advancement we would make $600 a wk. What should he do... it could mean being very comfortable. However, if he doesn't make the advancement we would be screwed. On the $350 we're ok, but not good. HELP!!!

Basically it would come down to the requirement for Advancement. You state that it is a "good chance of Advancement" but what are the requirements to obtain this? And it's personal risk as well...how much are you willing to assume that he will NOT make this promotion. Also, how long would it take to be eligible for Advancement? Are you cutting your 10-month buffer closely? If so, then you might not be willing to take this risk. But if you would still have time and he were denied the promotion, he could look elsewhere. It's all about personal comfort level, IMHO.

Take the job with a chance for advancement. Until the advancement, cut some things out of your budget or get a part time job to cover the $50/week difference. All life is chance, very little aspect, so don't worry so much about that. Plus, there could be about a two fold increase in income, which is well worth the chance; which I may remind you, is a "good chance of advancement."

The wise man knows that sometimes you must step backwards to go forwards.

Life is about the future, people who live for today end up losing tomorrow.

Take the job with the chance of promotion and advancement because in reality I bet you could save $50 a week if you really had to.

I think he ought to take the chance. When trying to cut back, Dave Ramsey always says to "eat beans and rice; rice and beans". Cook cheap meals and eat at home, rent a movie instead of going to one, don't buy ANYTHING on credit, conserve gas by consolidating errands while you are out, do without cable t.v., and switch your cell phone to a pay as you go plan. Do you whatever you have to to make this work!

When he gets that advancement, you two can go to a VERY nice dinner somewhere and laugh about all of the sacrifices you've had to make.

Take the chance - but make sure you are prepared to put in some extra hours along the way to help cover things.

If you never take a chance - you never succeed!
