This is a tricky question. However my answer is:

Yes, sugar is food. As for the food group it belongs to, it really depend on the source from which the sugar is extracted...sugar cane (plant), beets, palm (fruit), molasses, honey (bees), etc, and whether it is categorized as sucrose or fructose.

Take your pick and fit it in the right group!

All foods have sugar in them in some form or other. For example fruit has fructose and milk has lactose. The best diet for a diabetic is fresh veg, no or low fat, fresh fruit in moderation but no grapes as they have exceptionally high sugar levels, and whole grain foods such as shredded wheat, porridge oats, weetabix. These have no added sugar but the natural sugar in them is released into the system slowly. Use half fat or skimmed milk and half fat cheese. Stay off alcohol as it will quickly put on weight but 1 glass of dry wine daily will be fine. I am diabetic and have done all these things and I lost 3 stone very quickly and have effectively reversed the diabetes although it is still lurking waiting for me to put on weight and eat the wrong foods. Ask doctor or your diabetic clinic for the special diet sheets that tell you what you can and cannot eat. Best of luck to Mum and tell her not to worry but do these things.

Yes sugar is food and most fruit have some.

Sugar itself is not in a food group and you shouldn't take in a lot of it, but you body very much needs it. Normally our body creates its own sugar for fuel; it is a very efficient fuel that means it is high in calories. Finding sugar in the wild is a rare event, so we have developed a sweet tooth and a desire for it. This is genetic and you only have to see what it does to bears to know how attractive it is.

Sugar is Carbohydrates in it's simplest form. But I don't recommend just eating sugar...we need complex carbs too.

Dan S, Barbara, unknown & Jilian have the correct answer. All sugars, regardless of source are carbohydrates, simple carbohydrates to be more specific. They are grouped w/ other carbohydrates in the Food Pyramid.

your mum doesn't need to be that strict. i am also diabetic. if she asked a nutritionist, they would tell her to eat plenty of fruit and veg but make sure to eat carbs with every meal. like potatoes, pasta, rice, bread etc. as long as she sticks to this she will have her sugar levels under control. hope she's OK and stabilised soon x
