you dont have to "go on" a diet (that never works) to get abs but diet is the key to lowering body fat percentage which is what you need to see your abs (most of people have them but few have them visible).
Make healthy food choices -eat 5-6 small meals a day: lean protein, healthy fats, complex carbs, lots of fruit and veggies and lots of water.
Cardio is what you need to do (running, jogging, HIIT, cycling, rope jumping, swimming etc.) 4-6 times a week for average of 45min and do light weight training a few times a week. Do crunches 3 times a week max - 15-25reps 2-4 sets.

The first answerer is right. Crunches and persistence does the job. But if you want some variety, then try what my cross country team liked to call, "the Five Minute Workout." Literally, it will only take you 5 minutes. Do the following exercises:
-Crunches
-Bicycles
-Leg Lifts
-NAVY Seals (Alternating Leg Lifts)
-Inchworms (or Jack Knives)
You must do each exercise for one (1) whole minute, then immediately move onto the next exercise without rest. After the workout, your abs will ache, so perform the seal stretch to relax your abs. Trust me, this and some cardiovascular exercises, and you'll have the abs of your dreams. Good luck.
