I have a very, very, VERY bad temper. Yesterday, my so-called friend said something that pissed me off so much, I had tears in my eyes, trying to stop myself from beating the tar out of him. I need a way to calm down fast. Not meditating or anything, cause I need a way to do it right then.

i am the same way - i've lost it BIG time and gotten in so much trouble, that i now have a felony. you MUST just try to RELAX - never ever DO anything, or make ANY decision when you're fired up like that - just take 5 - you must learn to control yourself - can be very serious -
when you get that mad, PRACTICE doing nothing until you calm down - you'll learn to control yourself - i promise

Have you ever witnessed anyone "beat the tar" out of someone because off a disagreement? Physical violence is NEVER an acceptable reaction. Accept that you are an emotional person.....accept that other people say things that are out of line with our thinking. Learn to ACCEPT other people , places and things JUST the WAY THEY ARE. IF you can.
Have you discussed this with a medical professional?
Have you ever abused any drugs or alcohol?
do you have low blood sugar? do you get like this if you haven't eaten?
Are you young and inexperienced and lacking the wisdom that helps calm a person?
Try and keep things in persepctive.

See anger management techniques, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris on page 4. You could also try the EFT version for use in public (page 2), which looks like massaging your temples, and claim you have a headache. Meditation acts long term, as a preventative measure, helping you become a calmer person, without so short a fuse. Pages 2, 11, and 2C refer.

One thing that helps is to consciously give your self a brief time out to take several relaxed, deep, slow breaths, and try to relax all your muscles at the same time - this helps stop the adrenaline. Practice the breathing each day so it becomes second nature - you can practice while tying your shoes or some other thing that you do everyday.

Well if it was a racialcomment, you need to be pissed off. I am the same way with anger though. I tend to snap very quickly and black out. I control it by playing some Metallica or Pantera.

Smile, Walk Away, take Deep Deep breaths til you're calm.
Deep breaths are important, the lack of oxygen to the brain
will cause you to do things that you WILL regret.
Your friends might actually secretly enjoy seeing you get
all worked up, so watch your back.

Go out for a walk, go do something. I used to have a really bad temper too. I found that if I sat there thinking about what made me mad, it made me madder. So get away from what is making you mad, and occupy yourself so you cant dwell on it. In time you will become not as mad.

I have this too. When I began taking anti-depressants, it helped. Maybe this is a symptom of something deeper. Good Luck.
