In all honesty, the sound of chewing (open or closed mouth) REALLY bothers me. I mean, it gets to the point where the sound is under my skin and literally takes all of my effort not to explode with irritability. I try to ignore it, but whenever I notice it I can't take my mind off of it. The weird thing is, I can listen to animals eat, but I can't stand hearing people eat.
I can't explain the irritability that builds up inside me. It's horrible!

BTW, it doesn't seem to bother me when I'm eating too.
Anything crunchy (repetitively of course) bothers me... ice, chips (ESPECIALLY chips), etc...

I will leave the room if at all possible. While we are on improper etiquette for eating, I would include slurping. Some people with otherwise decent table manners think it is acceptable to loudly slurp beverages, especially if the drink is hot. I also hate the sound of a utensil scraping the pattern off of my china. Even the clinking of a utensil against anything puts me on my last nerve. Thank you. That felt good. I have wanted to get this off my chest for a long time. As far as animals go, I love to hear my horse munching. Go figure.

I can't stand people who chew opened mouth. Especially if they are rushing to eat! Gosh, they sounds like a freaking pig! I know the feeling of "takes all the effort not to explode with irritability", I have been there and have done that a couple times!

Yes, I am bothered by this too, I work in a restaurant, and Ive had people call me to their table to ask for something, and their mouth is opened, so I just look the other way, A friend of mine talks with her mouth full all the time and its so discusting, I told her not to talk till shes finished eating, but she wont listen to me. So I just dont watch her eat!!!

That's not very uncommon - if anything it is a trait you share with loads of people, including myself. I just learn to deal with it. My roommate licks his fingers loud enough for the people three floors above us to hear. If leaving the room works for you, you can stick with that - or politely ask them to chew with their mouths shut and not lick their fingers. Of course - being annoyed by others had made me more self-conscious about my eating habits. I may be doing the same thing - but no one will point it out.

OMG ... Yes. Not so much when it is just regular, well mannered eating, but when someone slurps their soup or uses a spoon to drink tea or eats with their mouth open and you can see the food or they are talking while they have food in their mouth (and it's usually too much food in their mouth) or slurps when they drink out of a can. Arg. My boyfriend's son eats like a barnyard animal, the barnyard animal that is called a PIG. I have to walk away from him when he eats ... if you can ever get him to eat, but that's another story. My dog's manners are better. I am a nut about bad table manners. I won't go out to eat with anyone who has bad table manners. It's just too easy to learn the proper ones.

Definitely. Chewing should be without opening the mouth.
This is taught at Swiss etiquette schools for good manners.
Disgusting are public eating places in China- so much slurp and noise ... one cannot stand it.

Oh gawd, I hate it. It annoys and disgusts me to no end to see and/or hear people eating. I know exactly what you mean about feeling like you are going to explode from irritability. It makes my skin crawl.

OMG! Yes! and here are some others that I really dislike: my sister pops her gum. She's the noisiest gum-chewer I've ever known. And my husband makes gulping noises when he drinks. and I have a friend who hums, yes HUMS!, when he eats.

YES!
Now, imagine talking to somebody on the phone who is eating and typing on her keyboard. Now imagine you also hate the sound of fingers striking a keyboard. This while she also interrupts the conversation to talk to her co-workers, without muting her phone.
AARRRRGH!

It doesn't bother me. I "smack" sometimes. It aerates the food and makes it taste better. Try it. Also, if people were slurping the food I cooked I would be honored as I would see that they must be really into it to eat with such vigor.
I do dislike spitting though! Yuck!
